FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 9, 2026) - Gov. Andy Beshear has extended his executive order that reduced the gas tax by 10 cents and resulted in lower gas and ...

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 9, 2026) – Gov. Andy Beshear has extended his executive order that reduced the gas tax by 10 cents and resulted in lower gas and diesel prices across the state for 33 cities and counties where local officials requested an extension.

Kentuckians in areas where the county judge/executive chose not to request an extension can expect to see prices at the pump rise by 10 cents per gallon starting Thursday, June 11.

“Gas prices are too high due to the continued war in Iran, and Americans – including right here in Kentucky – are struggling. Every dollar counts, and my executive order lowered gas and diesel prices across the state to help our families save,” said Gov. Beshear. “Government is there to help our people, and the state can and will make up any potential financial hit. Right now, our priority should be on Kentucky families, and I applaud these local leaders for doing what’s right.”

To extend the May 5 executive order past the 30-day mark of Wednesday, June 10, Kentucky law required county judge/executives and city mayors to make a request.

The Beshear administration received requests from leaders in the following areas, where the order has now been extended through Tuesday, June 30: the cities of Alexandria, Ashland, Campton, Carrsville, Clay City, Covington, Drakesboro, Earlington, Eminence, Falmouth, Gamaliel, Glencoe, Island, Jenkins, London, McHenry, Oak Grove, Owensboro, Owingsville, Paintsville, Park City, Sebree, Smithfield, Smiths Grove, West Point, Whitesville and Winchester; Louisville Jefferson County Metro Government; and Carter, Graves, Magoffin, Morgan and Wolfe counties.

The communities that did not request an extension will see gas and diesel prices rise beginning Thursday, June 11. The Governor acknowledged that some local officials’ decisions to not make a request may stem from pressure from certain state legislators in recent committee hearings.

Recognizing the strain rising gas prices were putting on Kentucky families, the governor said he took several steps in early May to provide relief.

First, the Governor signed an emergency regulation to freeze the gas tax at 26.4 cents per gallon ahead of an expected increase to 27 cents per gallon on July 1. The action to freeze the current rate is projected to save Kentuckians about $1.7 million combined each month.

Gov. Beshear also signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency related to gas prices. The order reduced the gas tax by 10 cents, resulting in a 10 cent per gallon price decrease for Kentuckians. The order was expected to save Kentuckians $26.8 million combined over a one-month period.

To enforce the reduction and ensure providers didn’t keep the 10 cents, Gov. Beshear also activated the state’s price-gouging statute.

The Governor also sent two letters urging leadership in Congress and leaders in Kentucky’s congressional delegation to suspend the federal gas tax until the end of the year.

In a proactive step, the Governor also signed an executive order to freeze the 2026 motor vehicle assessment rate ahead of an expected increase on Jan. 1, 2027.

These actions came just weeks ahead of a May 27, 2026, price decrease in Jefferson County and parts of Bullitt and Oldham counties after the Governor’s request to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the Louisville area to be removed from the federal Reformulated Gasoline Program received approval in February. For 30 years, Kentuckians living in these counties were paying 10 to 25 cents more per gallon.

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Kentucky Wesleyan College and the Owensboro YMCA plan to open a new school-age childhood center located on Kentucky Wesleyan College ...

OWENSBORO, Ky. — Kentucky Wesleyan College and the Owensboro YMCA plan to open a new school-age childhood center located on Kentucky Wesleyan College property.

College officials said in a press release that the announcement marks a significant step forward in a project supported by a $6.6 million grant thanks to an earmark from Senator Mitch McConnell and supported by Owensboro Mayor Tom Watson.

The planned center reflects a long period of engagement, planning, and discussion between the two institutions. It also builds on a relationship between Kentucky Wesleyan College and the Owensboro YMCA that reaches back many generations. Both organizations have served Owensboro through education, youth development, community care, and civic partnership, and the new center continues that shared commitment.

“Kentucky Wesleyan College is proud to become the new home for this project,” said Dr. James Cousins, President of Kentucky Wesleyan College. “The College and the YMCA are joined by missions and compelled by many of the same purposes: service, education, family support, and the long-term health of our community. This agreement is the result of many hours of careful consideration and work by so many people.”

Cousins added, “I am grateful to Tom Bontrager, Scott Kramer, and, of course, to our Board of Trustees for helping bring us to this point. We are enthusiastic about the project and look forward to seeing it take flight in the coming months.”

The school-age childhood center is also part of a broader, long-term vision for Kentucky Wesleyan’s campus and its place in the Owensboro community.

“This project belongs within a larger development plan for our campus,” Cousins said. “As Kentucky Wesleyan adds amenities and features that strengthen the College, we also strengthen Owensboro. Those plans are still being developed, but this early childhood center is an important part of that larger vision. It represents the kind of campus growth that serves our students, our neighbors, and the city we call home.”

“We are incredibly grateful to Kentucky Wesleyan College for their support in addressing one of the most significant needs facing working families in Owensboro today,” said Tom Bontrager, President and CEO of the Owensboro Family YMCA. “Access to affordable, high-quality school-age childcare remains a challenge for many families, and this partnership will help us expand services and create more opportunities for children to learn, grow, and thrive. We are proud to continue expanding our relationship with Kentucky Wesleyan College and working together to strengthen our community for generations to come.”

“This is an exciting opportunity for Kentucky Wesleyan College,” stated Scott Kramer, Chief of Staff and VP of Operations of Kentucky Wesleyan College. “The college has not been able to offer childcare services on campus since 2000. Our two main objectives when considering this project were to protect the iconic front lawn of the Administration Building and to save as many trees as possible on the Scherm Road side of campus. We will accomplish both initiatives and add childcare to campus. This is a true partnership with the YMCA and a huge addition for Owensboro and Daviess County.”

Additional details about the project, including timeline, site preparation, and program plans, will be announced as they are finalized.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Henderson County’s remarkable run of state softball success came to an end Saturday night at John Cropp Stadium as the Lady Colonels fell to George Rogers Clark 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the KHSAA State Softball Tournament.

The loss closed the curtain on another outstanding season for Henderson County, which finished 28-9 and reached the state tournament for the sixth consecutive year. The Lady Colonels entered the tournament having advanced to each of the previous three state championship games, winning the KHSAA state title in 2024 and finishing as state runner-up in both 2023 and 2025.

George Rogers Clark (38-5) struck first in the opening inning. After an error allowed leadoff hitter Bella Guinn to reach base, the Lady Cardinals capitalized when Lilli Hill drove a double to left field to bring home the game’s first run.

Henderson County answered in the bottom of the second. Kam Timmons drew a walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Pacey Parker. One batter later, Lilly Bennett lined a double into left-center field, scoring Parker from first base and evening the score at 1-1.

The Lady Colonels had a prime opportunity to take the lead in the third inning. With 1 out, Saniya Shields singled up the middle, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the George Rogers Clark catcher. With Shields standing 60 feet away, Henderson County head coach Shannon Troutman put the pressure on the Lady Cardinals. As the throw skipped past the center fielder backing up the play at second base, Shields broke for home. The ball rolled several feet away from the defender, but the center fielder quickly recovered, fired a strike to the plate and Shields was tagged out in a close play that kept the game tied at 1-1.

The deciding run came in the top of the fifth. Guinn opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a single by Addi Matthews. With runners on the corners and one out, Hill hit a ground ball that resulted in a fielder’s choice. Henderson County appeared to have a chance to turn an inning-ending double play, but could not complete the turn as Guinn crossed the plate with what proved to be the game-winning run.

George Rogers Clark pitcher Lilli Hill made the slim lead stand. The Lady Cardinals’ ace scattered three hits and struck out five in a complete-game effort, holding Henderson County scoreless over the final five innings.

Despite the loss, Henderson County received another strong performance from senior pitcher Kam Timmons. Timmons worked all seven innings, allowing six hits and just one earned run while striking out five. She finished her season with a 16-4 record and was later named to the KHSAA State Softball Tournament All-Tournament Team.

Lilly Bennett finished 1-for-3 with Henderson County’s lone RBI, while Shields and Ayden Bennett recorded the Lady Colonels’ other two hits.

While Saturday’s result ended Henderson County’s pursuit of another state championship, it did little to diminish one of the most successful eras in program history. The Lady Colonels captured their sixth consecutive Second Region championship this spring, reached the state quarterfinals, and finished among Kentucky’s final eight teams for the fifth straight season.

The Henderson County Lady Colonels survived a late Pulaski County surge and advanced to the quarterfinals of the KHSAA Sweet 16 State Softball Tournament, edging the Maroons 6–5 on Friday afternoon at the University of Kentucky’s John Cropp Stadium.

Henderson County (28–8) struck early with a three‑run first inning, highlighted by Kam Timmons’ two-out, two‑run double to left‑center. The Lady Colonels added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, building what looked like a comfortable 6–2 lead heading into the seventh.

Pulaski County (18–16) refused to go quietly. Brooklyn Thomas, who went 4‑for‑4 at the plate, launched a two‑run homer in the top of the seventh, and Ryann Sowder followed with a solo shot to pull the Maroons within one. A double by Kynslie Crabtree brought the tying run into scoring position, but Henderson County turned to Lilly Bennett, who induced a lineout to right field to secure the save.

Timmons (16–3) earned the win, striking out seven over 6.2 innings while also delivering at the plate with two doubles and three RBI. Saniya Shields added two hits, including a leadoff double that sparked the opening‑inning rally, while Ayden Bennett and Maggie Grogan each reached base twice and combined for four runs scored.

Henderson County’s aggressive baserunning also proved pivotal, swiping six bases and repeatedly pressuring the Pulaski defense.

Pulaski County was powered by Thomas’ huge day—two doubles, a home run, and three RBI—while Sowder added a homer and two RBI of her own.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 4, 2026) – A former Lexington pastor charged with sexually abusing a young church member is heading to prison.

Zachary King, who previously served as executive pastor of LexCity Church, appeared in Fayette Circuit Court Thursday for his sentencing hearing.

King, 48, was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

King previously pleaded guilty to Rape 1st Degree (Class B Felony), Sodomy 1st Degree (Class B Felony), Procuring or Promoting Use of a Minor in Sexual Activities (Class D Felony), Unlawful Transaction with a Minor First Degree (Class C Felony), Rape 3rd Degree (Class D Felony), Sodomy 3rd Degree (Class D Felony), and Sex Abuse 1st Degree (Class D Felony) in March.

The victim attended the church King pastored when the abuse occurred. According to court documents, on one occasion, King restrained the victim, raped and sodomized her.

At the time, the victim was a minor. King then contacted the victim to arrange additional meetings where he sexually assaulted her.

Under the terms of his plea agreement, King will register as a lifetime sex offender. The judge also ordered him to have no contact with the victim.

“The defendant not only betrayed the trust of his victim but an entire congregation and community. We are relieved he will be sent to prison, rather than returning to the pulpit,” said Attorney General Russell Coleman.

The Attorney General’s Department of Criminal Investigations investigated the case with support from the Lexington Police Department. Assistant Attorney General Todd Willard prosecuted the case on behalf of the Commonwealth. Erica Paske of the Attorney General’s Office of Victims Advocacy provided services for the victim.
