Henderson County Schools Will Host Read Across America Events

Read Across America is celebrated nationwide to promote the importance of reading and education. During the next few weeks, Henderson County Schools will conduct activities as indicated below:

 

A.B. Chandler Elementary:

 

Doughnuts with Dads for grades K-2.

Scholastic Book Fair “Story Laboratory: Reading Gives You Super Power!”

March 1st

Read the Most from Coast to Coast Accelerated Reader Quiz Day.

March 4th & 5th  all students will be participating in Dr. Seuss themed activities in the library.

A.B. Chandler Elementary will host a Reading and Science Parent Night on Thursday, February 28, 2013 from 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. The following activities will take place that evening:

 

– Dr. Seuss reading activities: Murray State College of Education students in collaboration with A.B. Chandler Elementary teachers;

– Pictures with Dr. Seuss;

– Science information session provided by the Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership group: Weather Station & Outdoor Learning Lab; and

– Book Fair will be open in the Media Center;

A free pizza dinner will be served, and all A.B. Chandler families are welcomed.

 

Cairo:

Kindergarteners are participating in Dr. Seuss activities with education students from Murray State on March 1.

Dr. Seuss Family Night on March 7 at 5:00.

Spring Book Fair from March 4-8.

Monday- Featuring the book “The Cat in the Hat”- hat day

Tuesday- Featuring the book “On Beyond Zebra”- wear stripes

Wednesday- Featuring the book “Fox in Socks”- crazy sock day

Thursday- Featuring the book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go”- wear your favorite college gear

Friday- Featuring the book “I’m NOT Going to Get Up Today”- wear pajamas

 

East Heights:

Classes have registered for the Accelerated Reader “Read the Most from Coast to Coast” challenge.

Spring Book Fair on March 4-8 in honor of Read Across America. They will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday with birthday cake and a Family Night at the book fair on March 7 from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Jefferson:

 

Special Days to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday month!

Monday – “Fox in Socks” – Silly sock Day

Tuesday – “I am NOT Going to Get Up Today” – Pajama Day

Wednesday – “My Many Colored Days” – Mismatch day wear lots of colors

Thursday-“Hooray for Diffendoofer Day”- Wear a Jefferson shirt; Hooray for Jefferson Day!

Friday — “The Cat in The Hat Day”-Wear Red and White and/or a hat (Read Across America Day)

 

Niagara:

 

3rd grade students will team up with culinary students from Henderson County High School’s Career and Technical Education Unit on March 1 from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. to emphasize the importance of reading by using recipes to create -food presentations. With Dr. Seuss’ birthday just around the corner, Niagara Elementary students’ food presentations will have the theme of Dr. Seuss’ Read Across America Day, making it a fun, educational activity.

Monday: The Cat in the Hat Reading- Justin Beiber will be reading the story via YouTube

Tuesday: Green Eggs and Ham Reading-Tim Tebow will be reading the story via YouTube

 

 

Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday-Ms. Aleisha/Ms. Rhea will be reading to the classrooms

Thursday: Dr. Seuss ABC-Living Book read via You Tube on SMART board

 

South Heights:

 

“Reading Gives You Super Powers” for Read Across America which will be a week-long event.

March 1 – Read Across America Day- Members of the community will visit our school and read with our students.

March 4 – Book Fair week with the same theme.

March 7 – family literacy event, “Pizza & Pages – Reading Gives You Super Powers!”

 

Spottsville:

 

Book Fair February 25 – Friday, March 1

Debbie Dadey Author Visit – February 26 (school-wide, during day)

Night with an Author – Tuesday, February 26 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Student Council Videos- Each day one of the student council members will be shown on closed circuit television reading the book of the day.

Read-A-Thon- Students will get sponsors and then participate in three hours of reading.

Door Decorating Contest- Students and teachers will choose their favorite Debbie Dadey book and then decorate their classroom door in a creative design.

 

South Middle School:

 

South Middle School has partnered with various community organizations to provide an engaging hands-on event to bring awareness for the need of universal literacy. The event is called StarBOOKS and is planned for February 26, 2013 from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at South Middle School. A free family dinner will be served from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. with activity booths scheduled from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

The National Junior Honor Society will be holding a read-a-thon on Friday, March 15th

after school until 8:30 p.m. in the SMS library. There will be food, door prizes, and lots of reading. Students will be seeking pledges per page or a one-time donation from sponsors.
