HENDERSON, Ky. – The City of Henderson’s John F. Kennedy Community Center will host the 27th-annual W.C. Handy Children’s Art Camp on Thursday, June 15.

The camp, which takes place from 1 to 3 p.m., is designed to help the community’s children get ready for the annual William Branaman Street Strut People’s Parade set for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 17, in downtown Henderson.

The annual parade is a New Orleans-style street event with decorated umbrellas. Some people also choose to dress in costume or as a themed group, but it’s not required. The parade is hosted by Downtown Henderson Partnership. It forms this year in Audubon Mill Park.

At Thursday’s camp, the Parks and Recreation Department staff will help children in grades 1 through 5 decorate their umbrellas. Other activities including learning how to strut, making newspaper hats, face painting, making bead bracelets and noisemakers, sandal making and visor making.

The workshop is open to everyone. For more information, call the JFK Center at 270-831-1261.

The community center is located at 515 S. Alvasia St.
