Public meeting to discuss US 60 widening at Henderson Community College

HENDERSON, Ky. (July 31, 2014)

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has scheduled a public meeting to share design plans for the widening of US 60 near Henderson Community College (HCC).

About a year ago, Governor Steve Beshear announced he had approved design funding to extend the four lane section of US 60 approximately 1 mile westward from the KY 425 Henderson Bypass intersection to help improve traffic flow and safety in front of the community college campus.

According to KYTC District 2 Chief Engineer Kevin McClearn, the project, estimated at $7 million, includes a multi-use path extending along the community college campus.

“The plan includes four travel lanes with a middle turn lane to improve safety and provide better access at entrances to Henderson Community College. It includes curbs and gutters, and provides an extension of the sidewalks and bike lanes that now end just short of KY 425,” McClearn said. “We are asking the public to attend a public meeting at the community college on Tuesday, August 5th, to review the design and provide comments that will be helpful as we move forward.”

The public meeting will be Tuesday, August 5th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Stagg Meeting Room of the Henderson Community College Fine Arts Center. The meeting will be in an informal format with maps and graphic displays of the initial design plans. Citizens are asked to review the plans, discuss them with the project design team and provide comments. Those comments will then be reviewed by the design staff, as well as the consulting engineering firm EA Partners, and then incorporated into the design process.

The Kentucky Road Plan, as approved by the legislature calls for right-of-way acquisition and utilities relocation to take place in 2015, with construction to follow in 2016.

For anyone who is unable to attend the public meeting, displays and other materials shared with the public will be available at the Department of Highways District 2 office at 1840 N. Main Street in Madisonville for two weeks. While transportation officials encourage anyone with an interest in the project to attend the meeting, the public can submit written comments to the attention of John Rudd at the address above until August 26, 2014.
