HENDERSON, Ky. – The planning committee for the brand-new downtown “pocket park” called The Perch won an award on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at an awards luncheon that wrapped up the annual Kentucky Recreation and Parks Society conference.
City of Henderson Parks & Recreation Department Director Trace Stevens nominated “civic-minded individuals who helped create a new park” in Henderson for the Special Citation Award.
Community partners who planned and constructed The Perch are City of Henderson, Downtown Henderson Partnership, Field & Main Bank, Henderson Audubon Board of REALTORS, Henderson Tourist Commission and Ohio Valley Art League.
“ ‘The Perch’ was installed this year with minimal funding from the City of Henderson due to a cooperative partnership that included public and private groups that donated their time, money and resources … ,” Stevens wrote in his nomination. “At the end of a long and challenging project this group was able to complete a project that changed the face of downtown Henderson for the better.”
Stevens said the park will provide citizens an opportunity to enjoy green space in the middle of their work day.
“This will place more people in contact with the Henderson Parks and Recreation system and show them the benefits of Parks and Recreation,” he added. “In addition to the park component the mural piece of the park has sparked a lot of interest in public art and has already influenced a business owner to add one to his restaurant. A second business leader made a donation to the tourism office for seed money to fund additional murals in Henderson. The desire to see more public art, specifically murals, has grown a lot after the successful completion of the one at The Perch.”
The Perch officially opened with a ribbon cutting on Friday, Nov. 2, in conjunction with the 10th-annual Art Hop Gallery Show and Sale.
The KRPS conference took place at Lake Barkley State Resort Park.
