A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans a SOUTHBOUND daytime lane restriction on the US 41 Twin Bridges between Henderson and Evansville on Monday, March 20, 2017, with the work zone moving to the NORTHBOUND bridge starting Tuesday, March 21, 2017.
SOUTHBOUND traffic on the US 41 Twin Bridges will be restricted to one lane on MONDAY to allow a continuation of steel repairs along the Henderson end of the southbound bridge. Much of this work is being done below the bridge deck.
This southbound work zone is expected to be in place from approximately 8:30 a.m. to about 2:30 p.m., on MONDAY, March 20th. All southbound traffic is expected to move to the left-hand or passing lane on Monday.
Starting TUESDAY, March 21st, the contractor plans to move the work zone lane restriction to the NORTHBOUND bridge with plans to continue work on the northbound bridge each day through Saturday, March 25th.
Motorists should be alert for slowing and merging traffic as they approach the bridges. Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and maintenance personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.
Hall Contracting is the prime contractor on this $527,000 steel upgrade to both the southbound and northbound bridge approaches. This project has a target completion date of April 15, 2017.
Another contractor has some guardrail work to complete along the approaches to the US 41 Twin Bridges in coming weeks.
These maintenance projects on the US 41 Twin Bridges have to be completed before the start of a major rehab planned along the US 41 Corridor in mid-May. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) are planning a major 3-year rehabilitation project along the US 41 Corridor between the US 41 Twin Bridges and the I-69 Interchange at the south edge of Evansville starting in May. This joint project headed by INDOT includes a deck overlay driving surface on the southbound bridge. For more information go to: http://www.in.gov/indot/3459.htm
The US 41 Twin Bridges, also known as the Bi-State Viet Nam Gold Star Memorial Bridges, are located at US 41 mile point 19.649 about a mile south of the Kentucky-Indiana State Line. They carry approximately 40,000 vehicles per day across the Ohio River between Henderson, KY, and Evansville, IN.
The bridges are located about a mile downstream from the confluence of the Green River and the Ohio River at Ohio River navigation mile point 786.8. The Twin Bridges have a total length of 5, 393.6 ft. with a 720 ft. main navigation span. The bridge superstructure is a Warren cantilevered through-truss design.
The northbound bridge was opened to traffic on July 4, 1932. The southbound bridge was opened to traffic on December 16, 1965.
