Commission takes step to ban smoking in parks


HENDERSON, Ky. – The City of Henderson Board of Commissioners passed a first reading amending the smoking ordinance at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 28. The amendment would expand a ban to city parks.
In another amendment related to smoking, the commission passed a first reading of the special events ordinance that would allow permit holders to designate whether a designated smoking area will be included for the event.

A number of reports were presented at the meeting:

–Finance Director Robert Gunter and CPA Mac Neel of Alexander Thompson Arnold presented the 2019 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, and Community Relations Manager/PIO Donna B. Stinnett piggy-backed on that with a brief presentation of a related publication.

–Police Chief Heath Cox reported to the commission about the Police Foundation as a potential supplemental funding mechanism for the department’s equipment and training programs.

–Vision Group Chair Missy Vanderpool along with Brian Bishop, Abby Dixon and Lindsay Locasto presented the recently completed Downtown Master Plan that is an appendix of the 2015 Vision Plan.

–Debbie Edwards, executive director of the Humane Society of Henderson County, gave the organization’s quarterly report.

–Henderson Tourist Commission Executive Director Abby Dixon provided an update about what her state tourism association is proposing in their legislative agenda.

In other business, the board:

Approved the submission and acceptance of a Highway Safety Grant.
Awarded a bid for the mowing contract for the city’s cemeteries.
The next regular meeting is 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the third-floor Assembly Room at the Henderson Municipal Center. There is a work session planned for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18. There will not be a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
