City to Host Central Park Cross Display Acknowledgement

HENDERSON, KY, May 7, 2020– The City of Henderson will unveil a temporary sign in Central Park, downtown Henderson, acknowledging the decades-long work of the American Legion Worsham Post 40 in creating the annual Memorial Day cross display.
The unveiling will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 8, on the Main Street side of Central Park with a small group that will include Mayor Steve Austin and members of the American Legion.
The American Legion organizers decided not to assemble the display for this Memorial Day because of the pandemic, and the annual Memorial Day service in Central Park also will not take place. The organizers have not ruled out having the display at another time this year once guidelines for social distancing have eased.
The cross display, a beloved feature of local culture and tradition, began in 1947 with 34 crosses in Central Park. In 2019, it had grown to more than 5,300 crosses and was on course to grow again this year.
“The City and the community have long embraced this tribute to our veterans, including those who are still with us and those who have gone on before,” said Mayor Steve Austin. “The display is great acknowledgement of their service to both our country and our community, and we look forward to its return as soon as it is possible.”
