HENDERSON, KY, July 7, 2020– A project launched this summer by Henderson Municipal Power & Light (HMPL) in partnership with Henderson Housing Authority (HHA) seeks to reduce electric power consumption at the public housing operation’s properties.
HMPL and HHA are working to convert all existing incandescent and compact fluorescent light to LED, which is estimated to save approximately 688,628-kilowatt-hours in electricity usage per year.
“HMPL has reimbursed the HHA for LED bulbs and fixtures, at a cost of $115,994.52, and the HHA is providing labor to perform the lighting changeout,” said Brad Bickett, Reliability Compliance Manager for HMPL.
“At current rates, conserving that amount of energy will amount to $48,410.53 per year in electric bill savings to the HHA and $28,846.62 in annual power cost savings to HMPL,” he added.
Bickett said HMPL is always looking for ways to reduce electric power consumption as it continues to evaluate and plan for the future power supply.
“Recent studies show that converting to LED lighting is one of the most cost-effective electric conservation measures,” he said, explaining how changing out fixtures contributes to savings in power consumption.
“Good quality light-emitting diode (LED) lighting is highly efficient, using much less energy and lasting much longer than incandescent and compact fluorescent lighting,” he added. “LED technology also offers improved quality of lighting, while the prices continue to decrease due to improved manufacturing. Furthermore, LED lighting produces less heat, reducing the air conditioning load.”
