An effort to change the current form of county government has come up short by less than 200 signatures. In a Facebook post, County Magistrate Charlie McCollum says people were still coming up after Tuesday’s Noon deadline wanting to add their names to the petition which had been circulating around town for the past several days. The petition asked Hendersonians if they would support putting to a vote in November whether to scrap the existing five magistrates and county judge makeup of County government and instead switch to a County Commission form of government which would consist of three commissioners who would be voted on at-large along with the County Judge Executive. McCollum has said this effort was not a reflection on the current Fiscal Court and pointed to the economic growth in neighboring Daviess and other counties who have commissioner forms of county government – growth that Henderson has not seen since the 1960s and 70s.
McCollum says hopefully someone will try again three years from now which is the next time this can be considered. He thanks all those who helped collect signatures especially David Thomason who worked up until Tuesday’s deadline as well as the current Fiscal Court in extending the deadline as much as they could. And while unsuccessful, McCollum says the experience does have a plus side as he has picked up about 50 new Facebook friends.
