Habitat for Humanity of Henderson Builds Two Habitat Homes for Essential Workers in Collaboration with Wells Fargo

Henderson, KY, Nov. 23—COVID-19 has rocked our world but that hasn’t stopped two local essential workers from becoming first-time homeowners.

Katie Sauer and Kay Schindler have been working during the entire pandemic in the Environmental Services Department at the local hospital. Both women are also raising two children each on their own.

“When Habitat for Humanity of Henderson found out the sacrifice that Ms. Schindler and Ms. Sauer and their families, make each day we felt that it was very important to build Habitat Homes for the Sauer and Schindler Families,” said Britney Smith, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Henderson. “Kay and Katie are both helping the local hospital to build a strong foundation for a healthy community and the least we can do is help them build a strong foundation with a safe, decent and affordable Habitat home.”

“It is heartwarming to know that two of our dedicated Environmental Services Department team members will soon have the comfort of a safe and well-built home to call their own,” said Linda White, chief administrative officer at Deaconess Henderson Hospital. “Katie and Kay have contributed greatly to keeping all of us safe at Deaconess Henderson Hospital, especially throughout this pandemic. They are heroes in our book. And thank you to Habitat for Humanity for recognizing these two mothers with a new home.”

The Sauers home was completed in October, and Kay Schindler’s Habitat home is under construction. While build during a pandemic has been difficult, Henderson Habitat’s building and barn crews (affectionately know as the T-Crew) have continued to build Habitat homes. The T-Crew was recently honored as one of the recipients of the prestigious Governors Service Award in response to their devotion of helping build affordable housing.

Beyond the T-Crew, Henderson Habitat is fortunate to have many community collaborators for each Habitat home that is built. The Sauer home was built, in part, by grants from the Dana Corporation, Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, Field and Main Bank, Kentucky Housing Corporation and Fifth Third Bank. The Sauer family build, and entire Letcher St. project was also a collaboration between the City of Henderson and Henderson Habitat.

The Schindler building site was donated by a local family and is being built in partnership with grants from Kentucky Housing Corporation, Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, Field and Main Bank and, for the first time ever, a Wells Fargo grant. Wells Fargo Foundation’s funding comes is part of an $8.1 million donation to Habitat for Humanity International for support to build, renovate and repair more than 350 affordable homes across the United States. A portion of the grant is provided through Wells Fargo Builds and part of the Wells Fargo Foundation’s $1 billion philanthropic commitment to create more housing affordability solutions by 2025.
