HCHS Senior Running Back Jaheim Williams helps power his Colonels over the Lakers of Caldwell County in the Hall of Fame Game.

The Henderson County Colonels opened their football season last night at home at Colonel Stadium against the Calloway County Lakers on Hall of Fame Night.

The Colonels started the game on defense as the Colonel defense came up with an interception on the first defensive drive by senior defensive back Jaheim Williams. That interception by Williams led to a 52-yard touchdown run by senior running back Jordan Wright that gave Henderson a 7-0 lead over the Lakers with 9:33 to play in the first quarter.

Minutes later sophomore quarterback Trajdon Davis, on his first snap as quarterback, ran a crazy 80-yard touchdown run up the Calloway County sideline that had the Colonel Crazies and Colonel fans going wild as the Henderson went further ahead 14-0 with 5:18 to play in the first quarter.

Then on the kickoff after the 80-yard touchdown run, the Colonels recovered the ensuing kickoff at the Calloway 4-yard line, as a Laker backed off the ball thinking it was going out of bounds for a penalty. On the next play, senior running back Jaheim Williams ran it in 4 yards for the score to give the Colonels a 20-0 lead over the Lakers after the missed extra point by the Colonels with 5:11 to go in the first quarter.

On the kickoff after Williams short TD run, the Lakers got their only score on a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by junior wide receiver Price Aycock to narrow the deficit to 20-6 with 4:55 to play in the first quarter.

All it took on the next drive for the Colonels was one play by senior running back Jordan Wright for a 53-yard touchdown run to give the Colonels a 27-6 lead with 4:36 to play in the first quarter.

Then with a little over two minutes left to go in the first quarter senior running back, Jaheim Williams ran for an 84-yard touchdown run to give the Colonels a 34-6 lead that would hold going into the second quarter with the Colonels on top of the Lakers by 28 points.

Less than two minutes into the second half the Colonels scored on a 10-yard touchdown run by senior Jordan Wright to give the Colonels a 40-6 lead with 10:06 to go in the first half.

Then with 7:15 to go in the first half the Colonels would have sophomore quarterback Trajdon Davis score on a 3-yard touchdown run that would give the Colonels a 47-6 lead over the Lakers.

Before the end of the first half, the Colonels would score once again on a 44-yard touchdown run by running back Jaheim Williams to push the score to 54-6 going into halftime with the Colonels up by 48 points.

The second half went by pretty quickly due to the lead the Colonels had over the Lakers so therefore a running clock the whole second half of the game. The only other offensive score the rest of the game was from the Colonels as senior running back Donavon Lewis ran in a 2-yard touchdown with less than three minutes left to go in the fourth quarter.

The Colonels would win by a final score of 61-6 over the Lakers with the Colonels improving to (1-0) on the season while the Lakers drop to (0-1).

Senior running back Jaheim Williams led the Colonels in rushing with 132 yards on the ground and ran for 3 touchdowns on the night while the other big senior running back Jordan Wright had 115 rushing yards and ran for 3 touchdowns as well on the night. Sophomore quarterback Trajdon Davis went 2 for 3 on 14 yards passing while also rushing for 101 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns. Junior quarterback Max Thompson went 3 for 5 for 26 yards passing on the night and had 3 rushes for 17 yards while senior running back Donavon Lewis rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown on the night.

The Colonel defense held the Lakers to 84 yards of total offense on the night by stopping the run and contained the passing game as well on the night. The Colonels offense on the other hand couldn’t be stopped as the team rushed for 436 yards on the ground and scored all 9 of their touchdowns on the ground. The Colonels had 10 first downs and didn’t turn the ball over at all on the night.

During the postgame interview Colonel Head Coach Josh Boston was asked his thoughts on the big win. He credited the fans and the atmosphere at Colonel Stadium. “First off, I want to give a big shout-out to our community for coming out tonight to support these kids. All the work they put in and with the group we’ve got and for our community to come out and pack the stands, I think we were probably close to eighty percent capacity tonight. It’s been a while you know going through Covid and everything and for them to come out after a few years of that and really support these kids. The kids were even talking about it at halftime how much energy there was in the stands and how much energy there was on the sidelines and just like I said a big shoutout and thank you to them for coming out and supporting our guys. The biggest thing for tonight I really liked how our kids handled the victory and we talked about that at halftime. Came out fast offensively and I think we ran maybe like ten plays offensively in the first half and kids were doing what they were supposed to be doing, being explosive, making plays whenever they needed to. The offensive line was doing a great job up front, running backs were making plays once they got to the second level. Defensively they were able to pick up a few first downs and so there are a few things there we will have to clean up, especially against the screen game. Other than that the kids came out playing fast and I challenged them at halftime and told them “look make sure when we go out we’re going to get some of these younger guys on the field.” When you got twenty seniors, there’s a big change whenever some of the sophomores got to go out in the second half like that. The upperclassmen did a good job of supporting those guys once it was their turn, those are the guys that during the week they’re the scout team, they’re the ones that are getting you prepared to be in a situation they were in tonight. Both groups handled it well, the upperclassmen once they were off they did a great job of supporting our guys and the underclassmen did a great job of playing and giving effort once it was their time to go onto the field.”

The Colonels will have a bye week next week as they will prepare for the following week on Friday, September 2nd as the Colonels will go on the road and face off against the Christian County Colonels in Hopkinsville with the kickoff set to begin at 7:00 P.M.
