Phil Gibson, the winningest coach in the history of the Henderson County boys basketball program, passed away Monday at the age of 67.

Gibson coached 12 years at Henderson from 1995-2007 compiling a record of 260-95 leading the Colonels to region championships in 1996 and 1999.

Both region title teams finished in the state Final 4.

Before becoming Henderson boys’ head coach, Gibson coached 17 seasons as the head man of the Webster County girls basketball program amassing 324 wins and a pair of region crowns.

Most recently, Gibson was an assistant coach for Jeff Haile & the Henderson County Lady Colonels basketball team. The Haile and Gibson sideline combo won 10 region titles in 13 seasons together.

Gibson was inducted into both the Henderson and Webster County Halls of Fame in 2021.

Gibson is survived by his wife Nancy, two sons — Brent & Russ Gibson, and a stepson Graham Herron.

WSON will air a special tribute show in memory of Coach Phil Gibson this Wednesday at 5 pm.
