The Henderson County Colonels suffered their 2nd loss of the season to the Owensboro Red Devils 14-8 at Colonel Stadium in Henderson in a big Class 6A vs. Class 5A rivalry matchup.
This week the (8-2) Colonels are at Colonel Stadium in Henderson in the opening round of the Playoffs.
Henderson County Colonel Head Football Coach Josh Boston talks about tonight’s matchup against the Barren County Trojans, “They’ve got some good players. Their tight end is their leading receiver. (He) does a great job of making plays, (they) do a great job of getting him open. They will (use) him at wide receiver, good size kid, pretty good athlete. (Their) running back does a good job doing what they need to do inside the box. They’ve got a good football team, even though they’re coming in as the 4 seed,” Boston added.
Coach Boston was asked what some advantages the Colonels might have against the Trojans and Boston responded with this, “ I think the biggest thing is the speed advantage. Making sure we do a good job of getting the ball on the perimeter, keeping them honest with our run game, and doing things to get the ball out there to our guys in space.”
When asked the keys to beating the Trojans at home in the opening round of the Class 6A State Playoffs, Josh Boston said, “Focus on us. We’ve talked about that multiple times this year. It’s one of those things where we go in and take care of business, don’t try to do anybody else’s job, do our own job and be where we are supposed to be. (To) understand the game plan, trust the game plan and go out and execute.”
The Colonels are ranked 8th in this week’s AP Kentucky High School Football Class 6A rankings.
Senior defensive lineman for the Colonels Saadiq Clements is 2nd in the state of Kentucky in sacks this season with 18 sacks. As a team, the Colonels are 2nd in the state in sacks with 37. The Colonels are a top 10 team in the state in points per game coming ranked 9th averaging 42.4 points a game. Other stat categories where the Colonels are ranked: 20th in rushing yards per game and 9th in rushing defense only allowing 57 rushing yards per game.
The Colonels during the regular season finished with 1,236 yards passing as a team while 16 passing touchdowns to 8 interceptions thrown. On the ground, the Colonels had 355 rush attempts for 2,610 rushing yards and 39 rushing touchdowns. Individual impressive numbers on the season was senior running back Jordan Wright rushed for 1,002 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. The most impressive stat I found was the two headed monster at running back for the Colonels this regular season in seniors Jaheim Williams and Jordan Wright combined for 25 rushing touchdowns while the Trojans of Barren County as a team rushed for 17 touchdowns on the season.
