On Tuesday night, November 15th, senior Lady Colonel softball player JaMaya Byrum signed to continue her athletic career playing for the Liberty University Lady Flames.

The first question when interviewing JaMaya was why Liberty University was the best fit for her, “It has a very competitive game to it. I’m playing against top teams in the country and we have goals to go to the world series and I think that was amazing. Also they have that foundation of a Christ centered school which is really important to me and my values. Being able to pick a school that kind of had both of those things because I’m very competitive and very passionate about my love for Christ so both of those things all in one was perfect for me,” JaMaya responded.

The second question when interviewing JaMaya was what’s this moment feel like having just officially signed to play college softball, and JaMaya responded with this, “It’s crazy, it’s a blessing. I have all these people here supporting me today and I think that they’re a huge reason for why I’m here today, so it’s a really big day and I’m really thankful for it.”

The third question when interviewing JaMaya was who she would like to thank that made this day possible, “Definitely my parents. They have done so many things behind the scenes that I don’t think I’ll ever know until I have my own kids. Just God in general, I’m thankful that I was able to get these opportunities to be here,” JaMaya replied.

The fourth question when interviewing JaMaya was how important was it for her to get this signing out of the way before her senior softball season starts, and JaMaya responded with this, “Very important. I’ve been a little antsy about it and just slightly anxious, but once again I have all these people here that have thrown it together for me. I’m excited to get this out of the way and prepare for (the) season.”

The fifth question when interviewing JaMaya was her expectations for her team and the Lady Colonels this upcoming season, “Expectations are very high. We’re kind of split in half, we lost a few seniors but we just have that leadership role in us no matter what age we are. We have a lot of people that are pushing each other and we’re very motivated this season. I’ve been seeing a lot of work in the fall, so we’re wanting to go to state and go big,” JaMaya responded.

The sixth and final question when interviewing JaMaya was her individual goals for this upcoming season in her final season of high school softball, and JaMaya responded with this, “Myself in the gym and just kind of creating those foundations of my game. For me I just want to be one of the top leaders on the team and try to be the best teammate I can.”

Last season JaMaya hit a 376 (.376) batting average with 40 RBI’s and 7 home runs and 17 stolen bases on the season.

JaMaya and the Henderson County Lady Colonels will open their 2023 softball season on Monday, March 13th, 2023 at home against the Apollo E-gals at 5:45 P.M.
