The Henderson County Colonels opened the 2022-2023 season against the Bowling Green Purples at home at Colonel Gym.
In the first quarter, the Colonels would outscore the Purples 17-12 heading into the second quarter. Both teams would score 14 points each in the second quarter, as the score at halftime was a 5 point lead for the Colonels over the Purples 31-26.
To begin the second half, the Colonels would outscore the Purples 15-14 in the third quarter, as heading into the fourth quarter the Colonels would have a 46-40 lead over the Purples. In the fourth quarter, the Purples would outscore the Colonels 19-13 and the score would be 59-59 so there would be an overtime. In overtime, both teams would score 9 points each with the score at the end of overtime 68-68 to force a second overtime. In the second overtime, the Purples would outscore the Colonels 9-6 as in the late stages of 2OT, the Purples gained the upper hand over the Colonel and defeated the Colonels with the final score 77-74. The Colonels start the season with a (0-1) record while the Purples start (1-0).
The leading scorer for the Colonels was sophomore guard Cooper Davenport with 25 points while knocking down 6 three pointers and was 3 for 4 from the free throw line on the night. Senior guard Gerard Thomas tallied 22 points and had 8 rebounds while shooting 8 for 12 from the free throw line on the night. Junior guard Alec Satterfield had 10 points and 8 rebounds while sophomore forward Lacon McKinney contributed 8 points. Sophomore guard Cole Branson tallied 3 points while sophomore guard Dwaine Moss scored 2 points on the night. Senior forward Jake Rideout contributed 2 points while sophomore forward Trajdon Davis added 2 points.
As a team, the Colonels shot 13 for 20 from the free throw line while knocking down 7 three pointers and grabbing 27 rebounds on the night.
The Colonels will take on the Evansville North Huskies on the road in Evansville on Saturday, December 3rd, at 6:30 P.M.
