Winter is approaching, and that means the Henderson Lions Club is gearing up for its’ annual one-night live auction. The event will be held Saturday, February 18th at Rookies Sports Bar and Restaurant in downtown Henderson. The event begins with a meal at 6:30 followed by the live auction. Lions will soon be soliciting merchants and businesses for live auction-worthy items. Last year’s items included vacation, golf and dinner packages, lawn and garden equipment, gift baskets, technology and electronics, handcrafted items and aged Pappy Van Winkle bourbon. A total of 46 items were auctioned off and the more than $38,000 was raised by the lions.
The Henderson Lions return all the money raised to the community in the form of grants to non-profit organizations and scholarships to local high school seniors. Lions also are involved in eye care, including providing eyeglasses to those who cannot afford them and screening local students in grades 1,3,5 and 7 for potential eye problems. Lions are also involved in combating diabetes.
The annual Henderson Lions Auction started in 1952 on local radio, moved to cable television in the 1970’s, and added an online auction component in the early 2010’s. The one night auction at Rookies was added in 2017 and has proved highly successful for the Lions. The club also raises funds by selling their famous lemon shake-ups at the Tri-Fest in April and through the annual Lions Arts and Crafts Festival at Audubon State Park in October.
