The Henderson County Lady Colonels faced off against the Washington Lady Hatchets out of Washington, Indiana at the SportsCenter in Owensboro this morning in the Independence Bank Kentucky-Indiana Classic.
In the first quarter, both teams scored 8 points heading into the second quarter. In the second quarter, the Lady Colonels outscored the Lady Hatchets 10-7, as the Lady Colonels held a 3 point lead over the Lady Hatchets at halftime with the score 18-15.
To begin the second half, Lady Colonels senior guard Mallorie Veal and senior forward Jarie Thomas combined for 9 points in the quarter, as the Lady Colonels would have a 31-23 lead over the Lady Hatchets heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth and final quarter, Lady Colonels sophomore forward Anna Kemp and sophomore guard Shalyn Sprinkles combined for for 14 points in the quarter as the Lady Colonels would outscore the Lady Hatchets 17-15, and come away with a 10 point win over the Lady Hatchets with the final score 48-38. The Lady Colonels improve to (7-1) on the season while the Lady Hatchets fall to (8-6).
Head Coach of the Lady Colonels Jeff Haile with the win achieved his 800th career win, as he ranks 2nd all time in Kentucky girls basketball history behind Randy Napier.
The leading scorer for the Lady Colonels was sophomore forward Anna Kemp with 12 points with 3 points while shooting 2 for 2 from the free throw line on the day. Senior forward Jarie Thomas scored 11 points and had 6 rebounds while sophomore guard Shayn Sprinkles contributed 10 points and 4 rebounds while shooting 2 for 3 from the free throw line. Senior guard Graci Risley tallied 6 points while senior guard Mallorie Veal recorded 5 points. To round out the scoring for the Lady Colonels, freshman forward Brooklyn Gibson added 4 points on the day.
As a team, the Lady Colonels shot 20 for 30 (66%) from 2 point range while shooting 1 for 6 (16%) from the three point line. Lady Colonels also shot 5 for 10 (50%) from the free throw line while grabbing 18 total team rebounds on the day.
The Lady Colonels take on the Gibson Southern Lady Titans out of Fort Branch, Indiana next week on Wednesday morning, December 28th, at North Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana at 11:45 A.M. in the Paul Logan Memorial Basketball Invitational.
