Trojans Fall to Southern Colonels on Battlefield / High Scoring Lyons too much for Storm

The Webster County Trojans faced off against the Christian County Colonels in the first game of the opening round of the Boys 2nd Region Tournament at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School in Madisonville. 

 

In the opening period, the Colonels outscored the Trojans 16-8, as Colonels junior guard Jordan Miles scored 8 points in the quarter. In the second period, the Trojans outscored the Colonels 15-14, as Trojan junior guard Evan Michalek and junior forward Deshawn Murphy combined for 9 points in the quarter as the Colonels would have a 7 point lead at halftime with the score 30-23.

To begin the second half, the Trojans would outscore the Colonels 11-10, as Trojan junior forward Deshawn Murphy scored 7 points in the quarter as the Colonels would hold a 6 point lead with the score 40-34 heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth and final period, the Colonels would outscore the Trojans 24-18, as the Christian County Colonels would get the 12 point win over the Webster County Trojans with the final score 64-52. The Colonels improve their record to (19-12) while the Trojans end their season with a (17-13) record.

The leading scorer for the Colonels was junior guard Jordan Miles with 16 points while shooting 3 for 6 from the three point line and 3 for 4 from the free throw line on the night. Junior forward Derrell Bateman recorded a double-double scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds while also dishing 4 assists. Junior forward JaSean Riley scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds while junior forward Breland Morrison tallied 10 points and 5 rebounds. Junior point guard Prince Northington added 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals while senior center George Sanders recorded 5 points and 8 rebounds. To round out the scoring for the Colonels, senior guard Kevarius Vaughn tallied 2 points and 3 rebounds on the night. 

As a team, the Colonels were 4 for 11 (36%) from the three point line and shot 10 for 18 (56%) from the free throw line while grabbing 43 total rebounds and committing 15 turnovers on the night. The Colonels also added 7 assists, 3 blocks, and 5 steals. 

The leading scorer for the Trojans was junior forward Deshawn Murphy with 19 points and 5 rebounds while shooting 2 for 5 from the three point line while recording 3 steals and 2 blocks on the night. Junior guard Evan Michalek scored 17 points while dishing 3 assists and shot 5 for 8 from the three point line while junior guard Luke Garrard tallied 6 points. Sophomore guard Micah Austin recorded 5 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals while senior guard Markus Austin contributed 3 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. To round out the scoring for the Trojans, junior guard Jarvis Starks Scott added 2 points and 3 rebounds on the night. 

As a team, the Trojans were 10 for 25 (40%) from the three point line and shot 4 for 14 (29%) from the free throw line while grabbing 20 total rebounds and committing 9 turnovers on the night. The Trojans also added 10 assists, 3 blocks, and 9 steals.

The Hopkins County Central Storm faced off against the Lyon County Lyons in the second game of the opening round of the Boys 2nd Region Tournament at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School in Madisonville. 

In the opening period, the Lyons outscored the Storm 35-19, Lyons junior guards Jack Reddick and Travis Perry combined for 24 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds in the quarter. In the second period, the Lyons outscored the Storm 15-13, as Lyons junior guard Jack Reddick scored 8 points in the quarter as the Lyons would have a 18 point lead at halftime with the score 50-32.

To begin the second half, the Lyons would outscore the Storm 26-23, as Lyons junior forward Brady Shoulders and junior guard Travis Perry combined for 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists in the quarter as the Lyons would hold a 21 point lead with the score 76-55 heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth and final period, the Lyons would outscore the Storm 33-20,  as the Lyon County Lyons would get the dominating 34 point win over the Hopkins County Central Storm with the final score 109-75. The Lyons improve their record to (28-5) while the Storm end their season with a (14-18) record.

The leading scorer for the Lyons was junior guard Travis Perry with a double-double scoring 32 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while shooting 3 for 9 from the three point line and 9 for 9 from the free throw line while also recording 4 assists and 4 steals on the night. Junior guard Jack Reddick scored 29 points and grabbed 5 rebounds while shooting 2 for 6 from the three point line while shooting 3 for 3 from the free throw line and dishing 6 assists. Junior forward Brady Shoulders contributed a double-double with 23 points and 17 rebounds while recording 7 assists and 5 steals while senior guard Bradin Nelson tallied 7 points and 4 rebounds. Freshman center Isaac Defew added 4 points and 5 rebounds while senior forward Walker Suitor recorded 4 points and 3 assists. Freshman guard Bray Kirk scored 3 points and grabbed 2 rebounds while freshmen forward Cooper Collins tallied 3 points. Senior forward Jonathan Downing added 2 points while freshman forward Lukas Breedlove recorded 2 points and 3 rebounds on the night.

As a team, the Lyons were 6 for 124 (25%) from the three point line and shot 19 for 24 (79%) from the free throw line while grabbing 51 total rebounds and committing 16 turnovers on the night. The Lyons also added 22 assists, 1 block, and 11 steals.

The leading scorer for the Storm was junior guard Drake Skeen with 26 points while shooting 7 for 15 from the three point line and 3 for 4 from the free throw line on the night. Junior forward Trevahn Jones scored 15 points while shooting 4 for 8 from the three point line while senior forward Namari Hall contributed 11 points and 8 rebounds while recording 2 assists and 3 steals. Freshman guard Davonyae Butcher tallied 9 points while shooting 3 for 7 from the three point line while freshman guard Issac Earl recorded 3 points. Junior forward Kain Craig added 2 points while sophomore guard Maddox Hunter scored 2 points. Freshman forward Cohl Hoard contributed 2 points and 5 rebounds while freshman forward Jerimiah Groves tallied 2 points. Sophomore forward Nylan Peyton recorded 2 points while 8th grade guard Lake Sumner added 1 point on the night. 

As a team, the Storm were 15 for 39 (39%) from the three point line and shot 10 for 14 (71%) from the free throw line while grabbing 25 total rebounds and committing 16 turnovers on the night. The Storm also added 11 assists and 6 steals.

The Christian County Colonels will take on the Lyon County Lyons on Monday night, March 6th, at 6:00 P.M. in Madisonville in the semi-finals of the 2nd Region Tournament.
