Kentucky State Police Lieutenant Graduates from FBI National Academy

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (June 14, 2023) – Kentucky State Police Lt. Jon McGehee has graduated as a member of the 286th session of the FBI National Academy. The graduation occurred at the National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, on June 8, 2023.

Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy offers ten weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend. On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.

The 286th session consisted of 238 law enforcement officers from 47 states and the District of Columbia. The class included members of law enforcement agencies from 25 countries, five military organizations, and six federal and civilian agencies.

Kentucky State Police Post 2 Commander Derek Smith said he was proud of McGehee’s graduation as only one percent of the nation’s law enforcement officers are nominated to attend the FBI National Academy.

“The training that Lieutenant McGehee received is valuable to all of us,” said Smith. “I am proud of his efforts, dedication, and the challenges he overcame. I look forward to seeing how his experience betters his career.”

McGehee was grateful for the opportunity to attend and graduate from the class.

“It was an honor to represent the Kentucky State Police during the National Academy Session 286. I am grateful to have shared this experience with some of the greatest law enforcement leaders from around the world,” said McGehee.

McGehee is a 13-year veteran of KSP and has served in several assignments, including trooper, squad sergeant, investigations sergeant, and operations lieutenant.

McGehee is a native of Muhlenberg County and is a 2004 graduate of Muhlenberg North High School. Lieutenant McGehee earned his master’s degree in Justice Administration from the University of the Cumberlands. Since serving with KSP, he has received the Governor’s Award for DUI Enforcement twice and Post 2 Trooper of the Year nomination. He currently resides in Bremen, Ky.

FBI Academy instructors, special agents, and other staff with advanced degrees provide the training; many instructors are recognized internationally in their fields. Since 1972, National Academy students have been able to earn undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia, which accredits many of the courses offered. A total of 54,366 graduates have completed the FBI National Academy since it began in 1935. The National Academy is held at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, the same facility where the FBI trains its new special agents and intelligence analysts.
