One unit of a Henderson duplex was a total loss following a fire yesterday in the 400 block of Smith Avenue.
Henderson Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Chad Moore said firefighters were dispatched at 11:40 a.m. Thursday to a structure fire at 473 Smith Avenue.
The first arriving unit reported heavy smoke conditions and fire coming out the front door and the rear of the duplex, said Moore.
The duplex is divided into two apartments A and B. The fire originated in apartment A, he said.
No occupants were inside the duplex when firefighters arrived. Apartment B is unoccupied, and no one was home at Apartment A.
“The first arriving crew did a transitional attack, meaning one firefighter was spraying the fire, while the other two firefighters were getting dressed, and getting their masks on,” said Moore.
Firefighters went in through the front door, discovering a working fire that was mainly in the kitchen area. Moore said firefighters accessed the fire and knocked it down in the kitchen area and then extinguished the fire in the attic area.
Apartment A where the fire originated was a total loss. Apartment B was unaffected.
The Red Cross was contacted to help assist the displaced occupants.
Henderson Police Department, Henderson County Emergency Management, Henderson Water Utility, and HMP&L also assisted at the scene.
Moore said the fire department is investigating the cause of the fire.
