Henderson Water Utility meter replacement project enters fourth phase

HENDERSON, KY, May 24, 2024– As part of an ongoing water meter replacement project, Henderson Water Utility is replacing residential water meters in several neighborhoods within the City of Henderson.

Henderson Water Utility has partnered with Second Sight Systems to perform the replacements.

The meters will be replaced during regular business hours, Monday through Friday. A meter replacement takes approximately 15to 30 minutes and the customer may notice a temporary disruption in service during this time.

The customers do not have to be present during the replacement of their water meter. However, Second Sight Systems will knock on the homeowner’s door when they arrive onsite to let them know they’re on the property.

Once the replacement is complete, they will hang a door tag to inform the customer of the new meter installation.

“HWU began replacing our older water meters in early 2021 with a more advanced metering system. The older meters were starting to reach the end of their life cycle and due to their age, each meter had to be manually read
for customers to be properly billed. With over 11,000 meters in our system the cost of manually reading each meter is significant. The new advanced meter system will electronically transmit its usage to the City’s billing department without having to be manually read,” offered Matt Calvert, Henderson Water Utility Chief Engineer. This is the fourth phase of the project that had to be completed in stages due to the overall transition cost.

“We are currently on Phase 4 and are on schedule to finish our last phase, Phase 5, next spring. Once completed the utility will save money by not having to physically read the meters. We will also be able to monitor usage of
any meter in real time. This will assist in finding leaks or other problem areas in the system. Finding leaks early will reduce the amount of lost water and help reduce the utility’s expenses,” stated Calvert.
