The Henderson County Colonels faced off against the Lyon County Lyons in the Opening Round of the 2nd Region Baseball Tournament in Hopkinsville last night.
In the top of the 1st inning, the Colonels would score 3 runs, 1 run on a RBI ground out by senior catcher Jayce Hicks, 1 run on a RBI single by junior third baseman Cooper Vowel, and 1 run on a walk to give the Colonels an early 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 1st.
In the top of the 2nd inning, the Colonels would score 3 runs on a 3 runs home run by junior third baseman Cooper Vowels that would extend the Colonels lead to 6-0 heading into the bottom of the 2nd inning.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Lyons would strike with a 2 out RBI single by junior shortstop Austin Spears to cut the deficit to 6-1 heading into the top of the 4th.
In the bottom of the 4th inning, the Lyons would score on another 2 out RBI single this time from junior second baseman Eli Baker to cut the Colonels lead to 6-2 heading into the top of the 5th.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, the Lyons would score 4 runs, 1 run on a walk, 1 run on a fly out, and 2 runs on a fielder’s choice to tie the game at 6-6 as the Colonels would get out of the inning not allowing the Lyons to score the winning run and forcing extra innings.
In the top of the 9th inning, the Colonels would score on a double play that would allow the runner for the Colonels at third base to come across the plate and give the Colonels the lead again 7-6 heading into the bottom of the 9th.
In the bottom of the 9th inning, the Lyons would have get a couple of runners on base from a few of walks issued by freshman pitcher Cole Thompson but with 2 outs and bases loaded a fly out to the Colonels second baseman Brody Belt to record the 3rd and final out and the Colonels would hang on and survive and win the game 7-6 in 9 innings, a game that took 3 hours and 15 minutes to decide. The Colonels would improve to (11-24) on the season while the Lyons season ends with a (22-7) record.
Colonels junior third baseman Cooper Vowels was 3 for 4 with a double and a 3 runs home run with 3 RBI’s while senior catcher Jayce Hicks was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Senior pitcher Reed Rheinhardt was 1 for 5 while senior right fielder Nick Belle was 1 for 3 with an RBI on the night.
Colonels senior pitcher Reed Rheinhardt in 6 innings allowed 7 hits and 3 earned runs while walking 4 batters and recording 7 strikeouts while freshman pitcher Cole Thompson came in and gave 3 innings of relief and allowed 1 hit and 0 earned runs while walking 5 batters and recording 1 strikeout on the night.
As a team, the Colonels scored 7 runs and recorded 7 hits, 5 RBIās, 1 stolen base, and committed 3 errors on the night.
The Colonels will face off against the University Heights Blazers tonight in Hopkinsville at Hopkinsville High School with first pitch set for around 7:30 P.M.
