The Henderson County Colonels faced off against the University Heights Blazers in the Semifinals of the 2nd Region Baseball Tournament in Hopkinsville last night.
In the bottom of the 1st inning, the Blazers would score 3 runs, 1 run on a RBI single by freshman catcher Courtland Gibson and 2 runs due to a walk to give the Blazers an early 3-0 lead heading into the top of the 2nd.
In the top of the 3rd inning, the Colonels would score 2 runs on back to back RBI singles, one from junior third baseman Cooper Vowels and one from senior first baseman Reed Rheinhardt to cut the deficit to 3-2 heading into the bottom of the 3rd inning.
In the top of the 4th inning, the Colonels would 4 runs, 2 on a 2 RBI single from junior center fielder Corben Throgmorton, 1 run on a RBI single from senior catcher Jayce Hicks, and 1 run on a walk to give the Colonels a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 4th.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Blazers would start the inning with a walk and back to back singles to load the bases and then would score 1 run on a groundout by sophomore left fielder Jackson Flynn and 2 runs due to an error made by Colonel senior first baseman Reed Rheinhardt to tie the game at 6-6 heading into the top of 7th.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, the Blazers would have bases loaded with 2 outs and Colonels junior pitcher Gavin Herndon would record a strikeout to force extra innings as the score would be 6-6 heading into the top of the 8th.
In the top of the 8th inning, the Colonels would score on a 2 out, RBI single from senior first baseman Reed Rheinhardt to give the Colonels back the lead 7-6 heading into the bottom of the 8th.
In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Blazers would score on a pop out from freshman first baseman Aiden Jones to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the top of the 9th.
In the top of the 9th inning, the Colonels would strike back on a 2 out, RBI single from senior shortstop Alec Satterfield to give the Colonels back the lead 8-7 heading into the bottom of the 9th.
In the bottom of the 9th inning, the Blazers would answer back and score on a walk to tie the game at 8-8 and force more innings heading into the top of the 10th.
In the top of the 10th inning, the Colonels would score 1 run on a 2 out walk and 1 run on a RBI single by senior right fielder Nick Belle to give the Colonels a 10-8 lead heading into the bottom of the 10th.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, the Blazers would tie the game on a 2 RBI double from sophomore left fielder Jackson Flynn and tie the game at 10-10 with only 1 out and runners at 3rd and 2nd. The Colonels would intentionally walk the next batter to load the bases and then the next batter sophomore center fielder Josh Pace would hit a RBI bunt single to walk off the game and come away with the 11-10 win in 10 innings over the Colonels. The Blazers improve to (25-11) on the season while the Colonels season ends with a (11-25) record.
Colonels senior designated hitter Evan DeKemper was 3 for 5 with a double while senior catcher Jayce Hicks was 3 for 5 with an RBI. Senior first baseman Reed Rheinhardt was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI’s while senior right fielder Nick Belle was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Senior shortstop Alec Satterfield was 2 for 6 with an RBI while junior third baseman Cooper Vowels was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Junior center fielder Corben Throgmorton was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI’s while junior pitcher Gavin Herndon was 1 for 3 on the night.
Colonels sophomore pitcher Hunter Evans in 2/3rd innings allowed 2 hits and 3 earned runs while walking 4 batters and recording 2 strikeouts while junior pitcher Gavin Herndon in 6 and 2/3rd innings allowed 7 hits and 2 earned runs while walking 4 batters and recording 3 strikeouts. Sophomore pitcher Hayden Turner in 1 inning allowed 0 hits and 1 earned run while walking 2 batters while freshman pitcher Maddox Golday in 1 inning allowed 3 hits and 3 earned runs while walking 3 batters on the night.
The Colonels had 2 players named to the All 2nd Region Team based on the regular season, one player being senior pitcher and first baseman Reed Rheinhardt and the other player being senior shortstop Alec Satterfield.
As a team, the Colonels scored 10 runs and recorded 16 hits, 9 RBIās, 1 double, 3 stolen bases, and committed 2 errors on the night.
