Kemp’s Shutout, Lady Colonel Homers Advance Henderson to Championship Game

The Henderson County Lady Colonels faced off against the South Warren Lady Spartans in the Semifinals of the State Softball Tournament in Lexington on Friday evening.

In the top of the 3rd inning, the Lady Spartans would record their one and only hit on a 2 out double by sophomore second baseman Kinleigh Russell but couldn’t score any runs as the score would be 0-0 heading to the bottom of the 3rd.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Lady Colonels would record their first hit of the game on a 1 out double by senior first baseman Taylor Troutman but the Lady Colonels would be unsuccessful as well to score a run in the half inning, as the score would still be tied heading to the top of the 4th.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Lady Colonels would score on a solo home run on 1-1 count off the bat of sophomore designated player Mackenzie Burczyk and then would score 2 batters later on another solo home run by senior left fielder Alyse Rollings to give the Lady Colonels a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the 7th.

In the top of the 7th inning, Lady Colonels would walk the lead off batter in the inning but then the Lady Colonels would record 3 outs to come away with the 2-0 shutout win over South Warren. The Lady Colonels improve to (35-5) on the season while the Lady Spartans season ends with a (39-4) record.

Lady Colonel’s sophomore designated player Mackenzie Burczyk was 1 for 2 with a solo home run and an RBI while senior Alyse Rollings was 1 for 3 with a home run and 1 RBI. Senior first baseman Taylor Troutman was 1 for 3 with a double on the evening.

The Lady Colonels defense was superb Friday night. After committing 8 errors in their two previous tournament games the Henderson defense was flawless including terrific outfield play. Senior left fielder Alyse Rollings, sophomore center fielder Braylin Risley, and freshman right fielder Saniya Shields all took away would-be Lady Spartan hits with running catches and diving grabs.

Lady Colonels junior pitcher Anna Kemp in 7 innings allowed 1 hit and 0 earned runs while walking 3 batters and recording 7 strikeouts on the evening.

As a team, the Lady Colonels scored 2 runs and recorded 3 hits, 2 RBI’s, 1 double, 2 home runs, and committed 0 errors on the evening.

The Lady Colonels will face off against the North Laurel Lady Jaguars Saturday evening, June 15th, in Lexington on the campus of the University of Kentucky at John Cropp Stadium in the State Championship Game of the State Softball Tournament with the first pitch set for 6:00 P.M. Central Time.
