First Roundabouts Expected to Open Later This Week

Henderson, Ky. (July 24, 2024) – The first roundabouts in Henderson are expected to open in the coming days.

Two roundabouts are expected to open at the reconstructed KY 351/2nd Street interchange on or after Saturday, July 27. The two roundabouts are west of U.S. 41 and will open in a temporary configuration with construction continuing in the area until late this year.

Roundabouts: What to Expect

Both roundabouts west of U.S. 41 will be open to a single lane of traffic with drivers using the outside lane. Kentucky 2084 and U.S. 41-South will be accessed using the roundabout movements. The
ramps to and from U.S. 41 will reopen to traffic and temporary traffic signals will no longer be in use.

The single lane configuration will offer motorists an opportunity to adjust to driving the new roundabouts. Even in a temporary configuration, opening the roundabouts is expected to improve traffic flow along 2nd Street.

The third roundabout, closest to Henderson County High School, remains under construction and will not operate as a roundabout until later this year. The third roundabout is expected to open once the new ramps to and from U.S. 41-North are complete and open to traffic.

The existing U.S 41-North exit ramp will still remain stop sign controlled. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction in the area.

Construction will continue in the area through late this year. Ongoing construction includes curb and gutter work, truck apron concrete, installing a gateway sign for the City of Henderson, erecting flag poles, lighting, final surface and striping.

More information about the roundabouts, including several instructional videos, can be found on the Roundabout Ready page on the project website at I69ohiorivercrossing.com.

Short-Term Lane Closures and Traffic Shift

Traffic closures are expected in the Kentucky 351/2nd Street area this Thursday, July 25 through early next week as crews prepare to open the roundabouts and shift traffic on U.S. 41 at Kentucky 351. Here’s
what drivers can expect:
• Southbound U.S. 41 is expected to be reduced to a single lane at Kentucky 351 Thursday –Tuesday.
• The exit ramp from U.S. 41-South to Kentucky 351/2nd Street is expected to reopen Saturday.
• After the exit ramp from U.S. 41-South to Kentucky 351/2nd Street reopens, the ramp from U.S. 41-South to Kentucky 2084 (Exit 13) will be closed and remain closed until Sunday.
• The ramp from Kentucky 351/2nd Street to U.S. 41-South is expected to reopen Sunday.
• Southbound U.S. 41 Traffic is expected to shift Sunday to the new overpass bridge built at Kentucky 351/2nd Street. Traffic will be shifting to the right/west so crews can complete building the new northbound bridge in the area.

Anticipated schedules are subject to change based on weather and other factors.
