The Henderson County Board of Education unanimously voted to reduce property tax rates at its most recent board meeting.
The school board held a public hearing on Monday evening at the Professional Development Center. The annual public hearing is required to be held before the board sets school property tax rates for the year.
Following the public hearing, the school board voted to unanimously lower its property tax rates during its regular school board meeting, said Henderson County Schools Director of Public Information Megan Mortis.
The board approved changing the rate this year to 67.4 cents for real and personal property. The previous rate was set at 67.6 cents.
The 67 cents rate is per $100 of property evaluation – so about 2/3 of $1 on every $100, according to Henderson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Bob Lawson.
“We feel like this is due to the growth of the community that property value has increased which allows the school district to lower the school tax rate this year,” said Mortis. “This approved property tax will continue to generate funding for our schools and is an action that certainly shows the commitment of our board to invest in our schools, our students while easing the tax burden on our community.”
