Early Learning Center closed Monday for water leak; school announces new schedule for next school year


Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center is closed Monday due to a water leak issue. There was no preschool or childcare Monday at Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center.

The Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center will implement a new schedule for the 2025-2026 school year. The schedule will transition from two full days of preschool per week to four half days per week, with separate morning and afternoon sessions.

New Preschool Schedule:

AM Session: 7:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.

PM Session: 12:00 noon – 3:00 p.m.

School Group Assignments:

AM Session Students: Preschool students who will attend A.B. Chandler Elementary, Cairo Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, and South Heights Elementary.

PM Session Students: Preschool students who will attend Bend Gate Elementary, East Heights Elementary, Niagara Elementary, and Spottsville Elementary.

Transportation Details:

AM Session: School buses will provide morning transportation to school. Parents/guardians will be responsible for picking up students from school.

PM Session: Parents/guardians will be responsible for bringing students to school. School buses will provide transportation home.

Meals Provided:

AM Session: Breakfast will be provided.

PM Session: Lunch will be provided.

Start Date & Soft Opening:

Preschool will officially begin on August 13, 2025. The first two days (August 13-14) will serve as a soft opening, with the regular schedule beginning on August 18, 2025.

Fundamental Friday Sessions:

In addition to the regular Monday – Thursday half-day calendar, there will be six Fundamental Friday sessions throughout the school year, which will be held once a month for four-year-old students. These sessions will focus on key developmental skills to prepare children for kindergarten.

Online registration for the 2025-2026 school year is now open. Families are encouraged to register early.

“We are looking forward to this new schedule and the time and thought that went into developing it,” states Henderson County Schools Superintendent Bob Lawson. “Our goal is to enhance kindergarten readiness for our preschoolers, and we believe this change further supports the mission of our early learning center: ‘Every Child, Every Effort, Every Day.'”
