Mills Responds to Trump's Executive Order Regarding Kentucky's Coal Industry

FRANKFORT, KY (April 9, 2025) – The following is a statement from Senate Majority Caucus Chair Robby Mills, R-Henderson, regarding President Donald Trump’s executive order on Unleashing American Energy.

“Coal is more than just a resource in Kentucky—it’s a way of life. I welcome President Trump’s executive order as a bold and meaningful step toward reviving Kentucky’s energy economy and getting our coal industry back on its feet.

“This executive order is exactly what I’ve been fighting for over the past three years—pushing legislation to push back against the Biden Administration’s overreach and relentless efforts to kill Kentucky coal. I’m proud that we finally have a president in the White House who is working for Kentucky, not against it.

“Kentucky has active coal mines in both the east and the west, and that matters. We’re a state with deep energy roots and a workforce that knows how to power this nation. This order gives both regions the opportunity to grow, rebuild, and lead again.

“It reaffirms the need for a diversified, reliable energy portfolio. By cutting through years of bureaucratic red tape, Kentucky can move forward with refurbishing coal-fired plants and fully utilizing our coal reserves to meet growing energy demands at home and across the country.

“This policy shift brings real hope for thousands of Kentuckians who’ve built their lives around coal. It gives our communities a fighting chance to restore jobs, revitalize local economies, and help America regain true energy independence.

“I appreciate the Trump Administration’s commitment to Kentucky’s coal industry, and I look forward to continuing this work with our federal and state partners to seize this opportunity for the Commonwealth.”

“Kentucky coal is powering up again—and so are the people who’ve never stopped believing in it.”
