City to host mock city commission meeting for local students

HENDERSON, KY, April 21, 2025– On Thursday, April 24th, Friday April 25th, and Monday, May 5th the City of Henderson will welcome over 100 local fifth graders to the Henderson Municipal Center to learn more about their City government.

Students from East Heights, Spottsville, A.B. Chandler, Bend Gate, Jefferson, Cairo and Holy Name School will spend part of their day at the City of Henderson electing a mayor and city commissioners and appointing a city manager, city attorney, and city clerk. Once their mock government is in place, students will be presented with local “issues” by City staff. They’ll be encouraged to approach the podium—just like in a real city meeting—and share their opinions on how the “elected” officials should vote.

Throughout the day, Henderson Mayor Brad Staton will guide students through each step, explaining the processes and terminology that keep local government running. The goal is to help students better understand how decisions are made and how they can have a voice in their community, even at a young age.

Several local leaders—including Henderson County Judge Executive Brad Schneider and Henderson County Clerk Renesa Abner—will also be on hand to meet the students and talk about their roles in local government. The idea behind this project is to teach students what happens in their government and how they can have an impact even at a young age.
