Clay Street Bridge Project Delayed, but Nearing Completion

HENDERSON, Ky. (August 13, 2025) – The Clay Street Bridge on Kentucky 812 in Henderson did not reopen as originally scheduled last week, but the end of the project is within sight.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet engineers are closely monitoring the final stages of this project and hope to see the structure open to traffic before the end of August, according to a news release.

The bridge, located at mile point 7.62 on Kentucky 812, was closed for over two months in the summer of 2024 after a routine inspection found significant deterioration in its steel support structure.

KYTC engineers quickly designed and implemented a temporary repair plan that encased the existing supports in concrete to stabilize the structure and allow for the safe reopening of the bridge in July 2024.

In March 2025, work began to fully replace the aging bridge, with a scheduled completion date of August 1, 2025. However, a series of delays prevented the reopening of the bridge by the required contract deadline.

Following contract terms, monetary deductions are being applied to contractor payments for each day beyond the original deadline until the bridge is safely reopened to traffic.

The Cabinet said it remains committed to keeping the public informed as progress continues. A revised opening date will be announced as soon as the contractor provides a definite date for completion.

Motorists are encouraged to continue using the signed detour routes until the bridge is reopened.
