North Cadets sweep gridiron rivalry with South Bulldogs

The North Middle School Cadets football program reigned supreme tonight on their home field, as both the 7th and 8th grade teams were victorious over crosstown rival South Middle, 40-8 and 46-36 respectively.

North’s 7th grade dominated the offensive side of the ball in the opening matchup, exclusively in the running game. Running back Cooper Belt, younger brother of HCHS starting quarterback Brody Belt, headed the charge for the Cadets. Belt finished with 54 rushing yards on 6 carries with 3 total touchdowns. Cadet QB Karmelo Scott added 97 rushing yards on seven carries, and LD  Huebner added a rushing score as well. The Cadet offense finished with 314 rushing yards on the night, despite zero passing yards. Jesse Buley, to his credit, had an interception for a touchdown in the victory as well. As for the South Bulldogs, their lone score came courtesy of Kamryn Moody’s rushing touchdown. The Bulldogs ended with 128 total yards of offense on the evening.

North would continue their offensive onslaught in the 8th grade game, led by running back Solomon Mitchell’s three rushing scores. Mitchell accounted for 134 of South’s 156 rushing yards. Eli Langley also found the end-zone via the ground, courtesy of his 52-yard touchdown. Karmelo Scott’s lone pass of the night connected with Cooper Belt in the first quarter for a 25-yard touchdown. The Cadets finished with 397 yards of total offense in their 20 point victory.

In the loss, the Bulldogs still had many bright spots. Rashied Green finished with two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving and 69 yards of total offense. Carson Taylor was also a weapon for South Thursday night, tallying 38 yards rushing yards, 34 receiving yards and one touchdown, while also adding a kickoff return for a touchdown. While notching 299 yards of total offense in a loss is something to hang your hat on, four turnovers are not, which inevitably cost the Bulldogs the game at Cadet Field.

North Middle will be back in action on Tuesday, August 26th at home against South Hopkins with 7th grade kickoff set for 5:30pm and 8th grade kickoff to follow. A schedule for South Middle football couldn’t be discovered at the time of writing.
