The Henderson County Colonels opened play at the Generals Christmas Classic with a dominant 69-34 victory over Louisville Western early Saturday morning at Thomas Nelson High School in Bardstown.
Despite the early 7 a.m. (CT) tip and a sparse crowd, Henderson came out with high energy, scoring the game’s first 21 points. The Colonels led 21-2 after the opening quarter and never looked back, taking a 37-12 advantage into halftime.
Henderson continued to control the game after the break, leading 44-25 after three quarters before putting the mercy rule running clock on Western late in the fourth. The Colonels forced 25 turnovers and controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Warriors 42-31.
Amare Stewart paced Henderson with 22 points. Jarren Byrum added nine, Kingston Shidler finished with eight, and Travis Little scored seven. Zeph Thomas chipped in six, Brayden Dennis had five, and Zayden Martin added four. Mikey Woolfork, Wyatt Townsend, Braden Williams, and Jahmarion Isabel each scored two.
Henderson played without starting point guard and leading scorer Xavion Johnson, who was sidelined with a tweaked right ankle suffered late in Wednesday’s game against Daviess County.
Henderson County advances to the semifinals and will play its second game of the day Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (CT) against Marion County.
