
Henderson County survived a marathon Saturday night, outlasting Taylor County 77-71 in four overtimes at Bowling Green High School’s German American Bank Classic.
The Colonels led 12-8 after the first quarter and took a 25-19 advantage into halftime. Henderson held a slim 34-33 lead after three, but the Cardinals rallied to force overtime with the score tied 46-46 at the end of regulation. The teams remained deadlocked at 52-52 after the first overtime, 59-59 after the second, and 64-64 after the third before Henderson finally pulled away by outscoring Taylor County 13-7 in the fourth overtime.
Junior Xavion Johnson led the way with 22 points, 16 of which came in the fourth quarter and overtime periods. Johnson went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch and delivered a clutch performance despite picking up his fourth foul with 5:01 left in the third quarter—and never fouling out.
Zayden Martin posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Travis Little added 14 points and four rebounds, while Amare Stewart finished with 13 points and two boards. Malachi Taylor chipped in six points and two rebounds, and Jarren Byrum, Brayden Dennis, and Braden Williams each scored two.
Henderson went 20-of-33 at the free-throw line and hit 5-of-13 from three-point range. Taylor County finished 21-of-33 from the line and 6-of-17 from beyond the arc. The Colonels held a 31-26 rebounding edge, and both teams committed 16 turnovers.
The four-overtime game marked Henderson’s longest contest since December 8, 2012, when the Colonels defeated Bryan Station in a five-overtime classic.
Henderson County improves to 10-3 and returns to action Friday night at Webster County at 7:30 p.m. in its first district game of the season.
