Colonels Close Season with Win at Owensboro

Henderson County closed the regular season with a 66-54 road victory over Owensboro Friday night, stretching its winning streak to 12 games.

The Colonels came out balanced offensively, placing six players in the scoring column in the opening quarter to build a 23-17 lead. Henderson extended the margin to 35-25 by halftime, then scored the first six points of the third quarter to open a 41-25 advantage.

Owensboro answered with a push, trimming the deficit to 50-43 after three and pulling within five multiple times in the fourth. Henderson’s backcourt of Travis Little, Xavion Johnson, and Amare Stewart took control down the stretch, accounting for all 16 Colonel points in the final quarter to seal the win.

Henderson went 20-26 from the free-throw line and 2-9 from three-point range. Owensboro finished 19-22 at the line and 1-10 from beyond the arc. The Colonels edged the turnover battle 11-12 and controlled the glass 30-19.

Johnson led the way with 16 points and 3 rebounds. Stewart added 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Little finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds. MaLaikye Taylor posted 6 points and 10 rebounds, while Zayden Martin and Braden Williams each scored 6 and grabbed 4 boards. Zeph Thomas added 4, Wyatt Townsend 2, and Brayden Dennis 1.

Henderson finishes the regular season 23-4 and will carry a 12-game winning streak into Thursday’s 6:30 p.m. District 6 Championship Game at Webster County High School in Dixon against the winner of Union County and Webster County.
