Henderson County Schools is expanding its preschool program to four elementary schools beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, increasing access to early childhood education for families across the district. In addition to the program at Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center, preschool classrooms will now be available at A.B. Chandler Elementary School, Cairo Elementary School, Niagara Elementary School, and Spottsville Elementary School.
All preschool programs will operate on a full-day schedule, Monday through Thursday.
In 2012, the district opened Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center to centralize services and provide a dedicated early childhood environment. Since opening, the center has served thousands of Henderson County children. This year marks a special milestone, as the Class of 2026 will include the first group of students who attended preschool at Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center. This moment reflects the lasting impact of early learning and the district’s continued investment in student success.
“We want every child to have the chance to succeed, and that starts with a strong beginning,” said Superintendent Bob Lawson. “By expanding our preschool program, we’re making sure more students get the early learning they need. Being ready for kindergarten is so important for future success, and this expansion helps us serve even more families throughout Henderson County.”
Who Preschool Serves:
State-Funded Preschool (Ages 3 and 4): State-funded preschool serves 3- and 4-year-old children with a diagnosed disability, as well as 4-year-old children who turn four by August 1, 2026, and meet income eligibility guidelines.
Tuition-Based Preschool (Ages 3 and 4): Tuition-based preschool is available for children who turn 3 or 4 by August 1, 2026, and do not meet income eligibility requirements.
Henderson County Schools 2026-27 school year online registration for preschool through 12th grade officially opens on March 18, 2026. Families are encouraged to complete the online process early, particularly for preschool enrollment.
Lawson said this expansion aligns with Henderson County Schools’ Pursuit of Excellence and commitment to preparing students for lifelong success.
