Colonel Seniors Deliver Late in Thriller Over Storm

The Henderson County Colonels survived a late rally from the Hopkins County Central Storm to win 56-55 Monday night in the Region 2 semifinals at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School.

Henderson jumped out quickly, building a 22-8 lead after the first quarter behind 7 points each from Xavion Johnson and Amare Stewart, who both knocked down a three and added driving baskets. The Colonels maintained control for most of the night and led 30-22 at halftime before extending the advantage to 45-39 after three quarters.

Hopkins County Central surged in the fourth and grabbed its first lead of the game, pulling ahead 55-51 with about 2:30 remaining.

Senior Braden Williams delivered in the clutch, scoring the final five points of the game for Henderson. His two free throws with 14.5 seconds remaining gave the Colonels a 56-55 lead. Fellow senior Travis Little sealed the victory with his second steal of the final minute in the closing seconds.

Stewart led Henderson with 14 points and 2 rebounds. Johnson added 12 points and 2 rebounds. Williams finished with 9 points and 4 rebounds, while MaLaikye Taylor had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Mikey Woolfork scored 6 points with 5 rebounds, including key fourth-quarter free throws. Zayden Martin added 4 points and 3 rebounds, Little had 2 points and 2 rebounds, and Zeph Thomas chipped in 1 point and 1 rebound.

Henderson County improves to 26-4 and will face the Lyon County Lyons (28-6) Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Madisonville for the Region 2 Championship.
