HENDERSON, Ky. – Henderson Community College recently announced the promotion of five faculty members. The promotions were approved by the Kentucky Community & Technical College System Board of Regents at its June meeting.
“I am so pleased to recognize these five deserving individuals. Each is a dedicated educator who puts their students first,” said HCC President Jason Warren. “Please join me and the entire HCC team in congratulating them on their achievement.”
Adam Blair was promoted to associate professor. Blair coordinates the 2+2 Education program partnership between HCC and Murray State University (MSU). In this role, he ensures that students from HCC’s Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education program have an opportunity to complete their bachelor’s degree with MSU in a timely manner. Blair is currently the interim Chair of the Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (LAPS) division. He also works tirelessly to support HCC students through engagement activities.
Dr. Michelle Chappell was promoted to professor and is coordinator of the Computer and Information Technologies program. In addition, she coordinates mentoring programs at Henderson County High School and Union County High School. Chappell regularly teaches dual credit courses and is heavily involved in community organizations such as the Henderson Chamber of Commerce and the annual Henderson Juneteenth Celebration.
Barry Phelps was promoted to professor and serves as the Coordinator of Business Administration. He also has teaching responsibilities in Computer and Information Technologies and is Chair of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) division. In addition, he has served as the Chair of the KCTCS Faculty Senate for the last two years, a prestigious position that represents all KCTCS faculty in areas of policy and curriculum. Phelps has also contributed heavily to the quality assurance of instruction process at HCC and has been a long-time member of the college assessment and accreditation team. He has been active in the college’s community and has served on several organizational boards.
Mark Smith was promoted to associate professor and serves as the Coordinator of the Industrial Maintenance Technology program. This program includes the Welding and Advanced Manufacturing Technology credentials, along with the FAME program. Smith works closely with HCC’s Workforce Solutions department where he regularly teaches non-credit courses. He was instrumental in developing the plans for the Advanced Manufacturing Center expansion that recently received over $1 million in grant support.
Dr. Scott Taylor was promoted to professor and serves as coordinator of communication and first year experience programs. He also teaches courses in mathematics, English, and physical education. Taylor’s versatility is evident in his work as Coordinator of Professional Development as he trains faculty in the use of new software; KES compliance; quality assurance of instruction; Performance, Planning & Evaluation processes; and the Blackboard Learning Management System. Taylor represents HCC on several KCTCS committees, including curriculum and distance learning. He has skill and experience with course scheduling and supports a wide variety of student engagement activities.
