Mustangs Stun Colonels

The Henderson County Colonels faced off against the McCracken County Mustangs at home at Colonel Stadium in the 2nd Round of the Class 6A State Football Playoffs.

 

The Mustangs defense would intercept the Colonels and then strike first on their first offensive drive of the night with a 4 play, 27 yard drive that ended with a 7 yard touchdown pass by sophomore quarterback Maddox ONeal to junior wide receiver Davion Dunbar, as after the made PAT, the Mustangs would take an early 7-0 lead over the Colonels with 9:39 to play in the first quarter. The Mustangs would force the Colonels to punt and then they would execute on a 6 play, 65 yard drive that resulted in a 15 yard touchdown pass by sophomore quarterback Maddox ONeal to junior wide receiver Cooper Falconite, as after the made PAT, the Mustangs would extend their lead to 14-0 with 4:36 to play in the first quarter. The Colonels would respond with a 1 play, 65 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Trajdon Davis, as after the PAT, the Colonels would cut the deficit to 14-7 with 4:26 to play in the first quarter. The Mustangs would then respond with a 3 play, 80 yard drive that resulted in a 61 yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Maddox ONeal to senior wide receiver Luke McLeod, as after the made PAT, the Mustangs would extend their lead to 21-7 with 3:16 to play in the first quarter. The Mustangs and Colonels would trade possessions and then the Mustangs would be the next to score on a 4 play, 43 yard drive that ended with a 40 yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Maddox ONeal to junior wide receiver Cooper Falconite, as after the made PAT, the Mustangs would extend their lead to 28-7 with 8:27 to play in the first half. The Mustangs would be the next team to score on a 2 play, 76 yard drive that resulted in a 74 yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Maddox ONeal to junior wide receiver Cooper Falconite, as after the made PAT, the Mustangs would extend their lead to 35-7 with 19 seconds to play in the first half. The Colonels would trail the Mustangs by 28 points heading into the locker room at halftime. 

 

The Mustangs would be the first to strike first in the second half on a 12 play, 35 yard drive that ended with a 26 yard field goal from freshman kicker Brock Wilson that extended the Mustangs lead to 38-7 with 15 seconds to play in the third quarter. The Colonels would score next on a 4 play, 49 yard drive that resulted in a 6 yard touchdown run by junior running back Tony Burrus, as after the successful 2 point conversion, the Colonels would trail the Mustangs 38-15 with 7:08 to play in the game. The Colonels would score a couple of possessions later on a 7 play, 45 yard drive that ended with a 4 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Trajdon Davis, as after the successful 2 point conversion, the Colonels cut the deficit to 38-23 with 1:30 to play in the game. The Colonels would suffer a stunning 15 point loss at home in the 2nd round of the Playoffs to the McCracken County Mustangs with the final score 38-23. The Mustangs improve their record to (6-6) while the Colonels end their season with a (5-7) record.

 

Colonel’s junior quarterback Trajdon Davis was 11 for 22 with 164 passing yards while throwing 2 interceptions on the night. Junior quarterback Trajdon Davis rushed 20 times for 93 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns while senior running back Eli Green rushed 13 times for 51 yards on the night. Senior wide receiver Max Thompson had 4 receptions for 54 yards while senior wide receiver Jackson Pendergraft had 4 receptions for 47 yards on the night. 

 

The Colonels as a team, had 157 yards rushing and 146 yards passing for a total of 303 yards of offense on the night. The Colonel’s defense allowed McCracken County  to 90 yards rushing and 249 passing yards for a total of 339 yards of total offense on the night, as the Colonels forced 6 punts, 1 fumble, and allowed McCracken County to get 13 first downs. The Colonels had 10 penalties for 82 yards while McCracken County had 9 penalties for 84 yards on the night.
