Henderson, KY, February 14th, 2020. Valentine’s Day is a day of love and there will be a double dose of love in the 200 block of Letcher St. Habitat for Humanity of Henderson is excited to invite the community to come and join us for a double groundbreaking. The Wiles and Sauer Families will both break ground on their new Habitat homes on February 14th at noon. The Wiles Family home will be at 217 Letcher St and the Sauer Family Habitat home will be at 219 Letcher Street. Anyone is welcome to attend. We do ask that all participants wear red to the event to show they have a ‘Heart for Housing’.
Dennis and Janice Wiles have been lifetime residents of Henderson. Volunteering is in their nature. Janice is an AmeriCorps member in Henderson County. Dennis originally was recruited to Habitat by his stepdaughter who encouraged him to get involved in helping to build Habitat homes. Once involved in volunteering for Habitat, Dennis and Janice felt that the Habitat program might be a good fit for their family, so they applied for the program in the Fall of 2019. Janice and Dennis are raising three children together and are so excited to begin this homeownership journey. “We are so excited to be able to help build our Habitat home and also the home of our future neighbor Katie at the same time.” Stated Dennis Wiles.
Katie Sauer is a single mother of two boys. Katie has worked at Methodist Health for the past two years and often finds it hard to make ends meet as a single mom. “I am so thankful for the opportunity to buy a house to make a forever home for us with the help of Habitat for Humanity. I can’t wait to see the smiles on my boys face when we get our key and move in” Said Katie Sauer.
“It is very encouraging to see the re-development that is occurring in the Letcher Street corridor. A BIG thank you to Habitat for investing in this area and making affordable housing a reality in Henderson, and congratulations to the two new homeowners!” stated State Representative Robby Mills.
“We are thrilled to see the new development on Letcher Street grow a little more under the leadership of Habitat,” said Mayor Steve Austin of the City of Henderson. “The City is proud to work with a community organization like Habitat as partners in transforming neighborhoods into better places to live and raise a family. We will continue to look for more areas for collaboration as we work to build community.”
