The Henderson County Colonels faced off against the Union County Braves in the 6th District Baseball Tournament Championship Game in Morganfield last night.
In the top of the 1st inning, the Braves would score on a balk by freshman pitcher Cole Thompson to give the Braves an early 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 1st.
In the bottom of the 1st inning, the Colonels would score on a ground out by junior third baseman Cooper Vowels to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the top of the 2nd.
Both teams would struggle to get any run across the board up until the 7th inning. In the top of the 7th inning, the Braves would score on a 2 out RBI single from senior third baseman Landon Jones to give the Braves the 2-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the 7th.
In the bottom of the 7th, the Colonels would need at least one run to keep the game and their chances at forcing more extra innings to have a chance to win another district title but despite back to back 1 singles the Colonels would be unsuccessful on scoring another run in the game resulting in a 2-1 loss for the Colonels and the Braves winning the 6th District championship for the first time since 2019. The Braves improve their record to (12-23) while the Colonels fall to (10-24).
Colonels senior left fielder Max Thompson was 1 for 3 with a double while senior catcher Jayce Hicks was 1 for 3. Junior center fielder Corben Throgmorton was 1 for 3 on the night.
Braves junior catcher Tate Nobles was 1 for 2 while junior shortstop Garret Shouse was 1 for 2 with a stolen base. Senior third baseman Landon Jones was 1 for 2 with an RBI on the night.
Colonels freshman pitcher Cole Thompson in 6 and 2/3rd innings allowed 2 hits and 2 runs while walking 2 batters and recording 8 strikeouts while senior pitcher Reed Rheinhardt came in and gave 1/3rd innings of relief and allowed 1 hit while walking 0 batters and recording 1 strikeout on the night.
Braves junior pitcher Payton Garrett in 7 innings allowed 3 hits and 1 run while walking 6 batters and recording 3 strikeouts on the night.
The Henderson County Colonels named these 3 guys to the All District Team from left to right in the picture above: Cooper Vowels, Reed Rheinhardt, and Clayton Brown.
As a team, the Colonels scored 11 runs and recorded 16 hits, 8 RBI’s, 8 stolen bases, and committed 3 errors on the night.
As a team, the Braves scored 9 runs and recorded 2 hits, 5 RBI’s, 7 stolen bases, and committed 1 error on the night.
