KYTC to Pave I-165 NB Lanes in Owensboro on Tuesday

Crews will complete one lane at a time, allowing the interstate to remain open

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (July 1, 2024) – On Tuesday, July 2, a contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will be paving the section of Interstate 165 damaged during last Thursday’s molten aluminum spill.

On Thursday, June 27, a commercial vehicle carrying around 500 gallons of molten aluminum spilled its load on the roadway, forcing the northbound lanes of the interstate to be closed for most of the day. Once the material was removed, temporary steps were taken to allow the roadway to fully reopen over the weekend.

Now crews will return to the scene to put down a new top layer of asphalt and restore the roadway to normal conditions. Single lane closures on the northbound lanes of I-165 will begin at 6 a.m. around the 69.6 mile point. This location is approximately 0.5 mile from the end of the interstate in close proximity to the Fairview Drive bridge over I-165.

Lanes will be paved one at a time, allowing KYTC to keep traffic flowing throughout the day. All paving is expected to be completed by the end of the day on Tuesday.

Some delays are possible during the movement and placement of equipment to facilitate the work. Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.

During final cleanup of the crash site, related damage to a drainage tile under the southbound lanes of the interstate was discovered. That damage does not impact traffic safety and does not require immediate attention, but KYTC does plan to address the damage later this summer. No date has yet been set for that work, which will likely require lane restrictions in the southbound lanes.
