City of Corydon to conduct leak tests on sewers

The City of Corydon will be conducting leak tests on the sanitary sewer system on Tuesday, July 23.

The tests will be conducted by blowing smoke into the sewer system’s pipes. The smoke will reveal sources of sewer odors in neighborhoods, as well as places where storm and other surface waters are entering the sanitary system.

A special nontoxic smoke will be used for the tests, according to Corydon Mayor Ronda Smith. The smoke is manufactured for this purpose and leaves no residuals or stains, and has no effect on plant or animal life.

The smoke has a distinctive but not unpleasant odor. Visibility and odor will last only a few minutes where there is adequate ventilation.

Because the plumbing appliances in homes or buildings are connected to the sanitary sewer system, some of the smoke may enter a house if the:

  • Vents connected to your building’s pipes are inadequate, defective or improperly installed.
  • Traps under sinks, tubs, basins, showers and other drains are dry, defective, or improperly installed, or missing.
  • Pipes, connection and seals of the wastewater drain system and under your building are damaged, defective, have plugs missing, or improperly installed.

All Corydon residents are advised that if traces of this smoke or its odor enter your house or building, it is an indication that gases and odors from the sewer may also enter. This can be both unpleasant and dangerous, as well as a health hazard to occupants.

Location, identifications, and correction of the source of the smoke that enters homes is urgently advised.

While the city will render all possible cooperation, correction of any defects in the pipes and sewer on private property is the responsibility of the owner. The services of a professional plumber are advised.
