Man arrested in connection with shots fired at apartment building

A 19-year-old has been arrested in connection with shots fired at a Henderson apartment building.

Henderson Police Department arrested Joseph Bonnell, 19, on multiple charges following their investigation into a report of several shots being fired into an apartment building on September 7, 2024.

Patrol officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Letcher St. and found two units had been struck by bullets fired from the roadway. A total of eight people were in the two apartments when the shots were fired. There were no injuries reported.

Witnesses said a gold truck left the scene at a high rate of speed after the shooting. Officers located the truck crashed nearby and determined it had been stolen.

An additional witness said two men dressed in dark clothing ran from the disabled truck. Officers found Bonnell in a yard near the crash scene.

Police said he matched the description given by the witness and was detained while the initial investigation was conducted.

Officers checked the area and found a handgun discarded nearby. The gun’s serial number was checked and was listed as stolen out of Henderson in 2018.

Several shell casings were recovered from the original shots fired call. They were collected for ballistic testing. Bonnell was not positively identified as a suspect at the time and was released pending further investigation.

During the follow-up investigation, detectives obtained a search warrant for Bonnell’s cell phone. Detectives said they found a video that linked Bonnell to the stolen handgun.

Another cell phone video filmed by Bonnell connected him to a vehicle that was reported stolen in Henderson on September 2, 2024.

The recovered stolen handgun was test fired for ballistic comparison to the casings recovered at the scene. The results showed the casings from the test fire and the September 7th incident were fired from the stolen gun recovered during
the initial response.

Henderson Police detectives used the physical and digital evidence to obtain three arrest warrants for Bonnell. He was arrested without incident on September 23rd.

Bonnell was charged with one count of receiving stolen property, eight counts of first degree wanton endangerment/discharge of a firearm, one count of theft by unlawful taking, one count of receiving stolen property (automobile), one count of receiving stolen property (firearm).

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information related to any of these cases is asked to contact the Henderson Police Department at 270-831-1295.
