Henderson County High School is excited to introduce a new Basic Firefighter I class in collaboration with the Henderson Fire Department. Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, this course will provide students with foundational knowledge of firefighting, preparing them for careers in fire science and fire protection.
Taught by experienced firefighters from the Henderson Fire Department, the Basic Firefighter I course will be part of the school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) unit. Henderson County High School joins only 10 other schools in Kentucky offering a similar program.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Henderson Fire Department to bring this opportunity to our students,” said Amber Thomas, Principal of Henderson County High School. “This class, launching next year, will serve as the foundation for the possibility of building a new Fire Science pathway within our CTE program.”
Students enrolled in the course will gain hands-on experience, classroom instruction, and potential certification opportunities, ensuring they are well-prepared for further training or employment.
“This partnership aims to inspire the next generation of first responders and prepare them for future career opportunities in the fire service and related fields,” said Josh Dixon, Fire Chief of the Henderson Fire Department.
Every February, the Career Technical Education (CTE) community celebrates CTE Month® to raise awareness of the role that CTE has in preparing learners for college and career success. The Henderson County High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) Unit is one of the largest single CTE programs in the state of Kentucky. Students at HCHS have the opportunity to pursue a career major in one or more of the 16 nationally recognized Career Clusters including Agriculture, Automotive Technology, Business, Computer Science, Construction Technology, Criminal Law, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, Education and Training, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Law and Public Safety, Machine Tool Technology, Marketing, Industrial Maintenance, Visual Communications/Multimedia Technology, and Welding Technology.
