The Colonels came away with a, 52-34, win against the Madisoville-North Hopkins Maroons in the 2nd Region Championship of the 2nd Region Tournament at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School in Madisonville last night.
The Colonels win their 5th Second Region Championship in program history and their first since 1999.
The leading scorers for the Maroons was Ryan Bryant with 9 points and 8 rebounds while Kanyon Johnson had 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Trashaun Smith had 6 points while Landen Smith had 3 points. Davin Cheirs tallied 3 points while Orion Underwood scored 3 points. To round out the scoring, Peyton Smith added 2 points and 3 rebounds on the night.
The leading scorers for the Colonels was Cooper Davenport with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals while Xavion Johnson had 13 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. Dwaine Moss scored 9 points and recorded 4 steals while Elijah Suggs tallied 8 points, 4 blocks, and 3 rebounds. Lacon McKinney had 6 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals while Braden Williams had 2 points on the night.
The Maroons shot 4 for 19 (21%) from the 3 point line to the Colonels 3 for 10 (30%). The Maroons shot 2 for 2 (100%) from the free throw line to the Colonels 15 for 18 (83%). The Maroons had a total of 26 rebounds while the Colonels had 25 total rebounds. The Colonels tallied 8 assists, 14 steals, and 4 blocks. The Maroons committed 17 turnovers to the Colonels committing 6 turnovers on the night.
The Colonels had 4 players that were named to the All 2nd Region Tournament Team as pictured above left to right: sophomore Amare Stewart, sophomore Xavion Johnson, senior Cooper Davenport, and senior Elijah Suggs.
Henderson County Colonels Head Coach Tyler Smithhart was named as the 2nd Region Basketball Coaches Association 2024-25 Boys Coach of the Year as pictured above.
The Colonels improve to (25-6) on the season while the Maroons season ends with a (17-13) record.
The Colonels will face off against the 9th Region Champions, the Cooper Jaguars, on Thursday night, March 27th, in the opening round of the KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen State Tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington with the tip off at 7:30 P.M. Henderson time.
