Henderson Police have arrested an Evansville man on dating violence related charges.
Police responded to a home in the 1200 block of Akin Drive at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday. Officers were told that Zachary Lane, 29, of Evansville had taken a woman’s car without her permission earlier in the day. Layne returned a few hours later without her car.
When confronted about the car, Layne reportedly slapped the woman and pushed her into a wall. Layne then grabbed the victim by her hoodie and drug her up a flight of stairs.
The victim was able to get away for a brief second before Layne punched her in the back of the head, rendering her unconscious.
Two witnesses to the assault told officers Layne then attempted to strangle the victim while she was unconscious. Both told him to stop. Both witnesses said Layne stopped but then
threatened them with bodily harm.
Layne fled the scene before officers arrived.
At approximately 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers received information that Layne had returned to the home. Officers took him into custody outside of the house.
After being placed in handcuffs, Layne refused to walk and began screaming. Layne showed signs of intoxication and continued to be uncooperative.
Layne was booked into the Henderson County Detention Center on the following charges:
- Assault 4th Degree Dating Violence
- Strangulation 1st Degree
- Terroristic Threatening 3rd Degree
- Auto Theft
- Public Intoxication
In addition to the listed charges, Layne was arrested on a complaint warrant from an April 2024 case alleging assault and harassment and two failure to appear warrants.
He is being held in jail on a $1,500 bond.
