Gnomes of Audubon Forest" Scavenger Hunt Experience Launches at John James Audubon State Park

May 16, 2025 (Henderson, Ky.) – A magical adventure awaits in the woods of John James Audubon State Park.

The Henderson Tourist Commission announced the launch of the Gnomes of Audubon Forest, an imaginative new outdoor experience that combines nature exploration and storytelling.

This self-guided scavenger hunt invites visitors to uncover ten hidden gnome homes, each marked by a beautifully crafted door and a unique gnome character with their own talents and contributions to nature. From birdwatching and woodworking to gathering morning dew, each gnome plays a special role in the forest.

Using a set of playful clues, participants will be guided to ten locations around the park, where they can discover each gnome’s home. At every door, visitors will scan a nearby QR code to hear a special voice message from the gnome who lives there. Upon finding and photographing all ten gnome homes, those who have been successful in their search can return to the Audubon Museum & Nature Center gift shop to claim a special prize.

“John James Audubon State Park invites families, nature enthusiasts, and the curious to partake in the Gnomes of Audubon Forest scavenger hunt,” said David Miller, Park Manager at John James Audubon State Park. “I am so very excited to share this experience with our visitors. This will be an amazing way for those of all ages to engage with nature in a playful and memorable way. I encourage visitors to take their time, enjoy the journey, and share their experiences with others.”

The custom doors were designed and created by students from Henderson County High School’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) program and School of Fine Arts (SOFA), showcasing the incredible talent and creativity of local youth. A companion book for children, developed by the Henderson Tourist Commission and sponsored by the Henderson County Public Library, is available while supplies last at The Depot Welcome Center.

“Rooted in collaboration and a shared love for our beautiful state park, the Gnomes of Audubon Forest brings together nature, storytelling, art, and education in one whimsical package,” said Abby Dixon, Executive Director of the Henderson Tourist Commission. “It’s a celebration of creativity and the outdoors that invites kids and adults alike to see the park through a new lens.”

The experience is free and open to the public during park hours. For clues and to meet the gnomes who call Audubon State Park home, visit HendersonKY.org/gnomes.
