Temporary closure planned for East End Park

HENDERSON, KY, – The City’s Parks and Recreation Department said East End Park will temporarily close beginning Tuesday.

The closure is to allow improvements to the playground’s surface which involves removing existing mulch and installing a new, poured in place rubberized safety surface, according to a news release. This upgrade will improve accessibility, enhance safety, and reduce maintenance needs for the play area in East End Park.

The new playground surface will be durable, soft, and shock-absorbent, making it one of the safest playground surface options available. It will also help prevent mulch from migrating into the adjacent splash pad drains, reducing clogs and long-term maintenance needs.

The upgrades taking place were made possible through a 2025 Crumb Rubber/Tire Derived Products Grant from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet. The program funds community projects that promote the use of recycled Kentucky waste tires, and help support healthy, outdoor activities for Kentucky families.

The total estimated cost of the East End Park surfacing project is $50,500. The grant provides a 75/25 match for eligible costs, with the City of Henderson contributing approximately $15,500 to cover its portion of the project.

An overview of the project’s tentative schedule can be found below:

  • September 2nd-5th: Parks staff will remove the current mulch and barrier materials.
  • September 8th-12th: – Day 1: Rock base will be placed and compacted by the Public Works team (the alley next to the park will be closed on this day) – Day 2: The concrete curb will be poured.
  • Days 3-5: Rubberized surface is installed and requires a 48-hour curing period.

Residents will notice orange safety fencing and “Park Closed” signage posted around the project site. This is to serve as a reminder that folks are not to be in the park during the construction period.

The splash pad will also be closed to the public during this project. The goal is to reopen East End Park in time for the week of September 14th, 2025.
