Henderson, KY – A teenager has been sentenced on multiple charges in connection with a fatal shooting in December.

Henderson Commonwealth’s Attorney Herb McKee said that Cameron Gilbert, 17, was sentenced to 15 years for first-degree manslaughter, first-degree wanton endangerment, and possession of a handgun by a minor.

The charges stem from a shooting that occurred on Mill Street on Dec. 14, 2024. The incident resulted in injuries to the abdomen of Henderson-native Clifford Hargis, which ultimately resulted in his death.

A Henderson County grand jury indicted Gilbert as a youthful offender (tried as an adult) in March. Gilbert was 16 years old at the time of the incident.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office offered a 15-year sentence to Gilbert after consulting with Henderson Police, Hargis’s family members, as well as considering the weight of the evidence.

Two members of the Hargis Family gave immensely impactful victim statements directed at Gilbert and his circle of friends, the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office said.  They prayed for Gilbert to find peace, rehabilitation and purpose during his prison sentence, prayed for Gilbert’s friends and the juveniles of the community to stop the use of weapons in settling their differences and help heal the community, and prayed for the parents of the community to address the issues of juveniles and weapons before they lead to violence.

The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney said it offers its heartfelt prayers for this family’s loss, and for their continued healing.

The Commonwealth Attorney’s Office also thanked Henderson Police Department officers and detectives for their thorough investigation, and for safely detaining the suspect.
